I have a RTV 900 that developed a knock . I pulled the engine trany and dropped the oil pan and the center rod is loose. I pulled off the cap and the crank shaft is scored.
What are my options? The money man thinks I can pull crankshaft , grind the bad journal and put it back together with new bearings. That seems too easy, a recipe for unpleasantness.
Or , take a crankshaft out of other RTV 900 that did not knock and stick it in with new bearings.. that doesn't take in account if the rod has some issue. I have questions like how to determine which bearing set to use, if any of the above mentioned repairs are even feasible.
He doesn't want to spend the 6k for reman motor, or the 3 to 4 thousand for used. Wants to do a bandaid. Your expertise and advice on what should be done and what will or not work is greatly appreciated

I believe that whatever you do is like putting a Band-Aid on a shark bite!

I am not being ugly when I say - a half ass approach will end up with a half ass result.

The real question - how long does he wish this engine to last ONCE placed back together? minutes, months or ???

There are many engines that have undersized crankshaft shaft journals with oversized bearings. So that is a feasible repair option- IF you can obtain the correct bearings that fill the space between the journals and the rod.

If I was doing this, I would replace the rod with a new one just because that would be better. Most people would use the existing rod unless it was damaged or expensive to replace.

There are machine shops that specialize in grinding crankshaft journals to eliminate the damage and they will generally be able to provide the proper bearing to fit how much material was removed.

He doesn't want to spend the 6k for reman motor,
A new in the crate, ready to run from Kubota is under $6,000.00.

You should either replace the rod or at least have it checked. You may even find that the block needs to be bored, so new pistons and rings will also be needed.
