In my recent post, I indicated that I had a number of small leaks which I "dreamed" of fixing. I received a lot of helpful responses. Today, I was clearing a downed tree and moving a large piece when my b2400 HSD, serial no. 72874, bucket got sluggish. I dropped the tree and went about 20 feet and the tractor slowed when moving forward - jittery. Turned off the tractor and looked under and saw a leak from the right rear axle - see pic. It appears that the right rear axle is out about 1/2 inch more than the left rear axle. My tractor is now sitting in the field behind the house. see pic. The flow of oil was fast but it took me some
time to get my phone to take the pics. It has stopped draining. As expected, the hydraulic system dip stick shows no fluid. I looked at the WSM workshop manual, Messicks parts site - Rear Axle, D30100 Rear Axle and Bllkvoodoo's post on this site "Axle seal is longer". I have the following questions:

1. Did I do any serious damage to my tractor and how can I verify if I have?
2. The WSM workshop manual suggests to me that the repair is fairly straight forward? Messicks indicates that all parts are available. My inclination is to order the oil seal (70), bearing ball (60), and the collar (50). The gear (40) is $559.75 and likely fine? The cir-clip external (30) and the inside bearing ball (20) are likely fine as well?
3. How do I get the tractor in the barn without further damaging it? I assume that driving it into the barn is not a good idea. Would towing it with my truck to the barn be ok (not easy though)? It would be difficult, but doable, to remove the tire and rear axle in the field and repair.

Your help is appreciated.

Take a deep breath... you simply popped the seal out, it's a common occurrence.

Go to a auto parts supplier get a can of Brake parts cleaner and sleeve retainer (like loctite for nuts).
Go back to the tractor with a drain pan, new fluid and above parts, drain whatever fluid is left in it, spray off the seal and surrounding area with brake parts cleaner, apply some sleeve retainer to the outside of the seal, reinstall the seal.
Lift the seat and confirm that the vent is open and working.
Refill fluid and get back to work.

Took several deep breaths and feel better. But, a couple questions regarding your post-

1. You say "apply some sleeve retainer to the outside of the seal, reinstall the seal"

a. I think the "seal" is what extents out about "1/2 inch more than the left rear axle" as shown in the pic. This is the area where I apply the sleeve retainer?

b. To "reinstall the seal" I just push the seal back in place or gently tap it in place with a hammer?

2. you say "confirm that the vent is open and working." I can stick a wire down the vent hole to ensure its "open" but otherwise do not know how to ensure it is "working"?

You have saved me a boat load of time and trouble. I appreciate your help.

Just bend it and look at the vent, they typically get mud dabbers that build nest in them.

push it in, and use a soft hammer or a block of wood and hammer to knock it back in seating it to the edge lip of the seal, red arrows.

Sleeve retainer will go on where green is after you clean that surface with brake parts cleaner.

I've had this tractor for over 20 years and used it for over 1000 hrs - never had this issue. Learn something new every day. Thanks.
