I acquired a m4030DT with i believe the s2602 motor in non running condition. New battery, pulled the valve cover and all rockers move freely, loosened injection lines at injectors and i am getting fuel, took exhaust loose at manifold and I have gray smoke while cranking it over. Will not fire at all, even tried a shot of ether and still won't fire. Is it out of time? I don't think i would have smoke coming out the exhaust if it was a compression problem. If it is a timing issue, how do I check timing on this engine? Thank you

Take the ether can, walk outside and throw it in the trash can!
Ether and Kubota = Death / Destruction.

You need to get a compression test of all the cylinders.
Gray smoke is 100% indicative to low compression.

What is the easiest way to check compression on this engine? Pull injectors?
Compression tester in either the injector location or the glow plugs whichever is easier to get to them all.
I tend to test in the injectors more than the glowplugs.
