I've seen them for

1) anti gelling
2) anti algae
3) 'cleaner'
4) anti water

The only reason I use additive is to keep my fuel from gelling... which happened the first year I had the machine. Since then I've always used it.

I never went down that rabbit hole and don’t plan to. Howes is reasonably priced, available at Walmart and hasn’t left me hanging. That’s all the convincing I need.

Gelling in winter, yes.
Most often, in diesel circles, it it is used to remove water and add lubrication to protect mechanical fuel pumps. US diesel is relatively "dry" and hard on spinning parts. The cetane boost helps too.

Additives were tested mixed with the baseline diesel at the "standard" (minimum) dose found on the label for that particular product. It was stated that regarding additives in general, "more is worse, not better."

I would say his wear and corporation tests are highly flawed since the recommended dosage want added to diesel fuel.

One thing not mentioned, which I think is critical in a long pump life is "HOW" it removed the water ...

A emulsifier will mix/combine the water in diesel fuel, which you then burn ...

A de-emulsifier, will cause the water to separate out, and then you drain that out of your fuel bowl ...

Diesel fuel can be "compressed" slightly in the high pressure fuel pump, water can't, and water is not a very good lubricant either!

I use a every day from Hot Shot in the summer, and there winter defence in the cold ... I get it basically for free from the truck stops, as I get "points" which convert to pennies for stuff bought inside the truck stop, from the fuel I buy for the bosses semi-truck, which I drive roughly 160K miles a year ...

Most fuel stations get there fuel from the same "rack" at the distillery or distribution terminal in the area ... How it is taken care of once delivered to the station is also critical ... In diesel fuel the old saying of "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" hold true.

Fuel setting and getting algae growth is more trouble the gelled fuel. A treatment for that can save a lot of cost and headache.

I've been using Stanadyne since 1992 when I bought my first diesel truck, so obviously I was disappointed in the lubricity/wear results. I'm left with some questions, would have preferred to see more data such as the actual fuel to additive ratios used, a wider range of tests to include other claims on the label, and would prefer a much larger sample size rather than one test for each, but these tests are expensive so I get it.

Having said that, I have a fair amount of Stanadyne to use up so might double up on the dosage to get through it (i.e. much closer to the XPD winter dose of 1/2 oz per gallon rather than 1/4 oz per gallon) and then consider switching to Opti-Lube XPD ALL-IN-ONE.
