Good Morning,
First post. Just moved to 10 acres and the house came with a B2301. Pretty happy about that, but I noticed when trying to run the bush hog the pto lever only goes into the mid only or mid/back function. I cannot get the lever to go into the rear only function. Any ideas? I am assuming its ok to run the implement even though its not in the "rear only" position? Thanks.

Good morning. Unless there is something wrong inside transmission the lever should/will go. Sometimes it’s a matter of putting your range selector in neutral and then trying your pto selector. Or also try running the pto and then shut it off, once it’s stopped spinning try selecting rear only. Worse case if you have someone to help shut tractor off with range sector in neutral have someone grab the pro shaft and turn it slowly back and forth while you try selecting rear only. Had this happen on my bx2680. Do you not force it whatever you do.

I downloaded the Owner's manual and it seems your tractor needs servicing ! That PTO lever is supposed to go to 'rear PTO only' position ( which makes sense). It might need a drop of oil to free up ? Others who own one are best to help.

In the meantime, no 'harm' is running both, providing of course nothing's attached to the midPTO shaft.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll give that a try. Who knows when it was serviced? Probably a good idea to take it in and have one done.

Finally had the time to run the tractor. What i learned was, the PTO had to be held in the mid/back position to run the bush hog. it liked to pop out on it's own. Then after a while, it wouldn't go in at all and started grinding. Even when everything had stopped moving. I guess it needs some serious work on the PTO. Any ideas? I'm mechanically inclined, just don't know tractors. I can learn as I go, but is this something to try and fix/replace on my own or pay the xtra $ to have it fixed?

here's what is called the 'gear shift lever' drawing. If it's not, most are similar. I see several things that should EASILY move and don't .
The 'clue' is that it 'pops out of gear'.
I suspect spraying rustcheck or similar 'oil' on the moving parts will 'free up' the levers.

even, ugh, WD-40, will free up BOTH levers on their common shaft, so a little oil, move levers several times, repeat a few times.

Do you think that would help it slipping out, too?
I would suspect the problem is internal. The PTO shaft appears to bs engaged by a splined collar that slides on the shaft. Pretty common design. The shift lever is what moves the collar into and put of mesh and that collar is probably not going fully into mesh.

Start will the SIMPLE stuff first...
You've got 3 levers that have to rotate independently on a common shaft but any buildup of rust/gorf can make 1 lever operate another or worse NOT allow #2 to work properly.

Oil them all, cycle them a zillion times, spray a little more oil on ,
Confirm the linkages ARE moving as expected by watching them move as expected while a 'temporary tractor operator' moves the levers for you.

If satisfied , then go for a test drive in the field.

Also how many hours are on the tractor ? Since it 'came with house' , any idea how long it sat unused, maybe in 'weather' ?

Odds are it's an external linkage problem and not internal. well hopefully. Eliminate the easy stuff first.
