I am getting ready for spring and will be using my EA single row garden bedder for the first time. I would like to know if there is a good starting point for the angle that I should set the discs at as well as the depth? If it matters, I am in sandy loam soil.

thx!

The angle and depth probably depends on how much soil you need to cover up the crop you've sowed ?
Other factor are soil type, moisture content, sunny or cloudy, all those things farmer know AFTER 10-20 years.. Remember 1 crop a year, means in 10 years, you've only planted 10 times( probably didn't take notes either..)
It'll be one of those 'learn as you grow' deals. After the first acre or so, you'll know.

Good day.

I am not sure if this will help or not…

I’ve never measured the angle on mine, but here is a couple pics if you like to try to guesstimate it….depending on what you are wanting to do (height / width) you may need a different setup.

I just recently added a second set of discs, but I did not change the angle. IMO take your crescent wrenches / socket wrenches with you when you go to the field, after you go a little ways, you’ll see soon enough if you need to adjust them. I’d probably start about 45 degrees and go from there. It may take a few adjustments to suit yourself.

I think I have spent more time monkeying with the cultivators to get that height / depth set right compared to the discs…my cultivators are right in the tracks so it’s compacted by the tire and need to be set just a bit lower than the discs for my set up. Personally I’d leave the cultivators up until you get the discs set where you want them and then adjust the cultivators down from there. YMMV.

Good luck and have fun. 🥃

I don't want to spend 10-20 years learning to plow, that's what online forums are for. BTW how do I start a profitable cow calf operation working on weekends and 2 weekdays after I get off at my 9 to 5 ?

the problem with 'learn it online', is that YOUR equipment and land is different than everyone else's, so really others can suggest this or that but YOU have to 'learn by doing'. Same as landing on the runway numbers every time.

re: calf operation...

easy ! quit you day job ! Real farmers with animals work 7 days a week from sun up to past sun down, in all kinds of weather, no holidays either unless you can get another farmer to take over.

Thank you! What made you want to add the second set of discs to your setup?

NP. I wanted to maintain the height I was getting but wanted a wider bed or the option to do two rows in the track of the machine (little more flexibility).

The bed hiller I had a very little experience with was set at a dedicated 45deg angles.. This on a homemade set up.. Depending on your ground and your crop, the width between the disks can make a difference..

Good day. I bought from EA. I am actually thinking about adding one or two more sets. I think I can add a couple more sets cheaper than buying an actual disc implement. Sure they are not same shape and would not work as effectively as an actual disc implement but I think they will achieve what I want. Last time a checked in Oct EA had them in stock. I’ll probably order some soon from them.

I have the same garden bedder. Found this on FB and it seemed to help. Moved the mounts out and slowed the tractor down.
It took some tweaking from there, but that was a good start.
