Older zg222s 08 I believe will only start and run with choke pulled so it starving for fuel - but got 12vikts at cutoff on base of carb and fuel pump is pushing 3psi and valve behind rear tire is great - am I pulling carb to clean and what do I need to watch out for ?

I've had good luck with Sea Foam cleaning carburetors. Try a mix of about half Sea Foam and half gasoline. If the engine will start, run it on that mix for a minute or two to ensure it's throughout the carburetor. Then shut it down and let it sit overnight. It should be fine the next day from my experience.

I usually pull the jet and clean it with a welders tip cleaner, then pull the jet tube and run the appropriate tip cleaner thru each set of holes. Follow that with some carb cleaner, scrape any varnish out of the bowl, use carb cleaner again and reassemble.
For the tip cleaner, I use a Forney tip cleaner that I got from Napa. Works great and has all the right tips for carbs.
