Engine intake systems are tuned like a musical instrument to cut out annoying sounds. That portion of the filter housing is doing the tuning for your engine.

Helmholtz resonator to control intake noise. Tuned intake systems can add power but also make some serious noise I spent 10 years or so working with intake systems and cams for high rpm 4 strokes.
Those resonators can control more than just sound.
Intake air moves in pulses (sound waves as example). At Certain frequencies the reverse (reflected) pulse can interfere with the arriving pulse. That could effect total air input volume, and engine performance.
The resonator disrupts the formation of well defined adverse pulses.

Huh.
That little pocket area catches all the PCV blow-by oil on my wifes 3.6L Chevy. Not sure if that's what it's supposed to do but that's what it does.

Good friend of mine did a lot of work on that subject years ago at Harley Davidson. Fascinating subject and I predict we are going to see a lot more of it as time goes on. Everything has a natural frequency and will vibrate at that frequency. Good for musical instruments but not so good for engines. Run an engine continuously at that frequency and it will vibrate itself apart. We have heard of tuned exhaust for years so tuned intakes makes sense to me.
