Transmission case open - cannot engage mid PTO

Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster.

BX2370. My transmission case developed a leak from the seal, so I drained it, opened it up to replace the seal. While removing the cover, #040 ball bearing was firmly set in the cover, and as a result gearshaft #20 has been pulled out slightly. It doesn't come out the full way, but it hangs down just a little bit. Somewhere down the line the gears seem to not want to mesh. According to this thread , the answer is to switch to mid PTO to get the gears to mesh. Mine seems to be stuck on rear PTO only, or the neutral in between rear and dual. I don't recall having ever had it on anything but rear.

When the PTO selector is in neutral both the mid PTO and gear shaft spin freely. With the rear PTO selected I can turn the mid freely and the rear moves about a gear tooth distance.

I can't start the tractor, and I can't put the transmission cover back on until the gearshaft is inserted deeper.

I've tried:

- Jiggling the PTO selector every which way
-Turning the mid PTO while shifting the PTO selector
-Hand turning the rear PTO - this doesn't want to work as the PTO gear and the gear shaft are difficult to keep together while turning the PTO, and the gearshaft is loose. This feels like my best option but I'm concerned with bending or damaging components
-Crying
-Wiggling the gear shaft every which way
-Engaging the PTO in combination with any/all of the above

Wondering if anyone can suggest why my PTO selector won't move to dual or mid only?
Any ideas on how to manually turn the rear PTO with the gearshaft not properly meshed?
Wondering if anyone has any other solutions?

Pulling my hair out as this was a pretty straightforward task to begin with.

Thank you,

After sleeping on this issue I've decided on two different ideas to try and get the mid pto to engage - first is to wrap up the #20 gear in something thick and heavy to protect the teeth, and attach a chain wrench to it to try and forcibly turn the gears while moving the pto selector.

The second is to dump some fluid in the reservoir, start the tractor and push gently on the PTO lever while simultaneously engaging and disengaging the clutch, in an effort to get the gear to mesh with the mid pto gears. This is described in the owner manual, however I'm concerned about doing this with an open transmission. Can anyone speak to this idea?

Thank you

Just a wild guess cuz I don’t know much. Is it possible to turn the engine over by hand which may help align gear? Ensure the engine does not start tho!

The only thing I can add is to pull the shaft as the manual says:
Hey, thank you for taking the time to find that. The shaft pulled out about that far when I pulled the cover off as the bearing seats in the cover. Now the shaft/bearing won't go back into original place as I'm assuming the gears aren't meshed somewhere down the way.

020 (shaft, pto) fits into 090. 090 has a fork on it that selects pto. 090 could have fallen, causing 020 to become misaligned. Can you remove 020 from the transmission and have a look up inside?

Second possibility, perhaps 090 was pulled far enough to disengage/bind the fork, if this happens you probably will have to remove the transmission and then assemble it manually from the front end.

i could be wrong. Never run into this issue.

Hey all, thanks for the help. I ended up using my "problem solver" screwdriver of 18" to reach way back to the teeth at the #060 ring and lifted the teeth back into place. Only a moderate bit of levering needed. Filled the resistor up and everything works great. The PTO selector also moves with no issue now.

thanks for all the suggestions, hope this helps someone in the future

Great that you got it sorted with no additional complications! 👍
