TG-48-XB greasing

There is a grease fitting on my tiller (not on the pto shaft) that the manual calls the outboard hub fitting. It is on the opposite side as the gear drive . I'm not sure how much grease to put in. On the u-joint fittings you know when to stop cause it starts squeezing out but on this fitting how do you know when it's enough?

There are also a couple of fittings on the pto shaft that are covered in plastic. Are there real metal fittings under the plastic? Can I cut these off to get to the metal fittings?

Outboars hub fitting:
A couple squeezes will do ya.

Don't cut the plastic guards.
You can grease these fittings without removing the guards.
May need to remove the tiller to access.
A 90 degree bend on your grease gun may help.

Thanks, I guess I'm good on the outboard hub cause I gave it about a dozen pumps.

I can access the plastic fittings on the pto shaft without a problem but I can't get the grease gun to securely attach to the plastic fitting like it does with the metal fitting so the grease seems to just ooze out around the fitting and not go in.

If they have plastic caps on the grease zerts you can take them off to grease them then put the caps back on after you are done

The plastic grease fitting does not have a cover. It is molded as part of the pto shaft safety cover. It looks like the one in this pic.

Maybe it's a non-greasable pto shaft?
Check on the inside of the yolk for a grease zerk.

Thanks, but no the pto shaft is greasable. There's another fitting just like in the pic on the other end of the pto shaft and the manual says to grease both of them. Not sure what you mean by yoke. If you're talking about the u-joints then they have there own grease fittings which I've already greased.

That appears to be a locating lug for a clamp

@cmorningstar01, thanks for the input but I think you're not looking at what I'm talking about. A locating lug wouldn't be plastic. It's the small fitting on the yellowish plastic cover on the pto shaft. It's sticking out next to the black plastic ring.

I understand what you are describing and to me it looks like a lug that would serve to keep a hose clamp positioned on the yellow plastic cover where it slides over the black plastic sleeve, What is inside the yellows bellows besides a universal joint on the shaft, The U joint has its own grease zert so it would not be for that, What is directly inside where this plastic lug is positioned.

@cmorningstar01, Thanks again for responding. After looking at the diagram in the manual it's where the male and female tube end yoke connects to the actual pto shaft. I can't think of any reason to put a hose clamp there on the pto. The actual instructions from the manual are below.

Grease the grease fitting on the "outboard hub, (Fig. E on next page) the two (2) grease fittings on the PTO universal joints, the two (2) grease fit- tings on the PTO safety shield and the inner surface portion of the PTO shaft.


The pic shows one of the the two (2) grease fittings on the PTO safety shield.

Is there any one who has a tiller like this that would know how to grease these fittings?
