You guys are dancing around pretty close to the correct explanation, I think. It's a drawbar for the lower 3 point arms, like the old Fords and Fergusons had, but with a riser for attaching the adjustable toplink. The toplink keeps the drawbar from rotating, so you can put a trailer ball on the drawbar and it will not want to flop back and forth.

I had something similar, except a receiver had been added and there was a hold-down chain securing it to the actual drawbar to limit how high the thing could lift since the 3 point has no downforce. Here is an old fuzzy picture of what I had (sorry, best I can do), where you can see the red drawbar, the limiter chain, and just make out the riser and toplink.

Berniew's looks like a homebrew version, has no trailer ball and no limiter chain. The riser for the toplink is way longer than mine was, don't know why it needs to be that long.
Looks like a (vintage) telescoping 3pt hold down to me.

So Guys, what exactly does a telescoping 3pt hold down do and why would I use it on my B6000 other than hold the lower arms apart and why would I need to hold them down? Sorry for my farming / machinery ignorance. It now has a bar across the lower arms with holes in that we use to put tow hitches through as shown in attached picture. Bernie

Personally I doubt the 3pt hold down theory but you never know!

I think there must be a hint in the strange jointed pin. Can anyone explain what circumstances such a pin would be used and what the benefit is?

If you tow something with a tongue on the three point with the draw bar, you might not want it to be pushed up by the towed load. Going down a hill, things could get unhappy. As to what this particular unit might have pulled, I do not know. Someone mentioned using it with rope, in which case probably no need to hold the arms down.

The sexy looking pin for the top link is a quandary. If it even goes to this unit.

Perhaps there is a boom (gin pole) that this “thing” goes to? The upper U shaped link would hook to the boom a few feet up while the end of the boom would hook to the top link location of the tractor? It wouldn’t be laterally stable, so an additional link from each of the draw bar ends would go up to the U shaped link and hook on the crazy pin. Just a WAG.

I do have a boom for my old 8N and that unit would probably even work with it, in the fixed length position.

I think I tracked down the hinged pin.
Seems they are used on Vintage Massey Fergusons Such as the model 35.

Used as the top link pin.

Any chance the mystery part is used on a Massey? Looking at the rear axle casting and where the top link would attach the bracket on your part looks as if it would fit.

Hi GrizBota thank you for your imput, I had to read that really slow as you use terms I am not familiar with. What is a tongue on the three point linkage? This machine and attachments are from an equine estate in the UK, so no lugging logs out of forests just mowing grass/weeds and picking up the horse poo. My brother bought the estate and had six polo horses. The previous owner was a main agent car dealer and was very particular about his equipment, he built a 15m x 15 m garage to keep it all in. He included the Kubota in the sale of the estate, plus a tipping trailer, lawn sweeper and a lawn aerator, so nothing heavy just maintaining lawns. This bar apparently was originally connected to the three point linkage but for what purpose no one could figure out and so the bar was changed for the current one were a tow hitch can be fitted. Yes you are correct the swivle bar is most interesting and one cannot fathom why it has that configuration but I will clean it up and send photos. Thanks Bernie

You’re asking a lot out of me! Lol, I was happy to just ID the pin for starters. 😀 If you notice the list of Models that pin fits includes the MF 135. Also from what I can tell it is used on the non-draft controlled tractors.

The fact that that bracket and pin looks like it fits the top link location on the axle casting and the spacing looks correct for your lower lift arms give credence that it simply stabilizes the lift arms in one vertical position. I have no idea as to the WHY though. Seems like an expensive and complicated way to keep the arms from swinging into the tires and at a set vertical height.

The implements that were used prior to the purchase of the estate were the belly mower, already attached, the tipping trailer, Lawn roller, lawn sweeper and the lawn aerator, which I can pick up on my own by hand so no need for hydraulics on any of the equipment. My brother bought the Massey Ferguson 135 after he puchased the estate and there wasn't one beforehand.

Thanks Ken, the 135 has chains attached to the lower arms to stop them hitting the tyres so I don't think it was off that, especially as the chains are really rusty. Thank you for your input much appreciated and getting me closer all the time. I'm sure betwen us we can work it out. Bernie

I believe the t-bar is part of Massey Ferguson “pick up hitch“ system.

This looks like it might be a different version of you t-bar but the video gives a good idea how the hitch worked. To save time go to about 15:40 and the video demonstrates its use.
I suspect if there is a 135 on the estate you might find the rest of the parts🤔😉

I think that’s it. The M-F and old Ford’s are pretty much the same tractor. My 8N looks nearly exactly like that M-F in that video, especially the rear casting that allows a long pin to installed though the top king and the ears on each side of the casting. The wiggle point in the pin allows top link assembly to move a little. IIRC, it does have that ability.

I don’t think this mystery item came with the Kubota, it’s probably several decades older.

The tongue I mention would be on a trailer. It would hook up to a conventional flat draw bar that runs between the outboard end links of the lower three point links. The tongue is not part of the three point system, or the system that the mystery assembly goes to. I think @ken erickson unraveled the mystery.

Well @ken erickson that is a very good job of figuring it all by piecemeal discovery!

I didn’t even realize that pin was articulated but wondered why it was so long and why the fork was reinforced with the round supports.

Figuring out what that pin fit then lead to investigating what was installed on the Massey Ferguson tractors. I had seen that type of hitch used as a child but had forgotten that even existed now.
