Does anyone on here have any experience with the MS 271 or Ms 291? I am looking at the 271 not sire if the 291 is worth the extra money.

Ran Stihl saws a long time. I have a little MS211, and will often pick it up over the commercial 046 Magnum.
Never used a 271, but have the older 291 equivalent just a little.
If it's occasional use on smaller stuff (hard- or softwood), either will be fine. I wouldn't plan to cut 18" stuff all day with either.
Both the 271 and 291 are very similar. Decent farm-type saws that can withstand some hard use. Not sure day-in-day-out you'd notice the difference, but betting the 291 would be a little quicker.

I have the MS 271 and the MS 311. Only time the 311 gets used is when I have help and need two saws running at once. The 271 has plenty of power for anything I cut. Rarely anything over 30 inch diameter.
I bought a 271 when I bought my house a few years ago and had lots of clean up to do. I sold it within 6 months and went to a 391. The 271 was ok with the 18 inch bar but I kind of felt it was under powered. The 391 with a 20 inch bar cuts way better. My buddy I sold the 271 to loves it though. I am cutting a lot bigger stuff then him though.
271 is great for limbing IMO. But not the saw I'd want to use for trunk cutting. Just doesn't have that raw power to rip through 24"+ logs without babying it.
It sure is nice to use the lighter saw for the bulk of clearing work though and not lug the heavy saw overhead.

If it's not a Stihl, I don't use it. Got 4 of them, 2 newer ones and 2 older ones. Gas to persorm exhaust surgery on the newer ones to get them to run right (open up the exhaust) but the okder ones run like raped apes.. Have an 028 from the 60's I bought new, ported and polished with a 20" bar running 404 chipper and a 075 with a 4 foot bar running 404 square tooth chopper (for those big jobs...lol and the newer MS ones that I breathed on a bit. Running 325 on them. Too bad the noise police spanked Stihl but that is fixable with a dremel tool.
I confess though, couple weeks ago I bought a Harbor Freight Bauer 20 volt chain saw. Pretty neat. No fuel mix, quiet as a mouse, lightweight, just the ticket for trimming. I like it and the price too. 60 bucks OTD. Not macho like a Stihl though, but certainly better than a Poolin. Come to think about it, ANYTHING is better than a Poolin.....

i would buy the unit with the decompression built in much easier to start anytime good luck and have fun

Both saws are rated by Stihl for 16" - 20" bars and both weigh the exact same 12.3 lbs. The difference is that the MS271 has a 50.2cc engine and the MS291 has a 55.5 cc engine. So this comes down to a bit more power if needed and a few more $$$. Either is an excellent choice, but personally I would opt for the MS291 because of the hp.

Son in-law uses MS270 for his firewood, good up through medium and some big wood. We have an outside wood boiler and have an MS 250 for limbing and small stuff and an MS 362 for the rest.

I am no expert by any means, but portable sawmilling is my business. Different Stihl chainsaws for different tasks; MS170, 028AV, MS310, and MS362. The 028 is a 55cc same as the MS291.
028's are rpm saws, they love to rev. Mine is the old style 28. No chain brake, solid mount handle bar with the heated grip. Only made them 2 years. All alloy, no plastic except the air cleaner cover and she's loud too. Same way with my 075. No plastic. Compression release mandatory. You don't start a 75 without a compression release unless you want to break your fingers. Alwats Stihl pre mix and bar oil and usually Stihl bars and chain though I don't like the no grease roller nose Stihl bars particularly. I prefer a greaseable nose and a replaceable one as well.
I do. I always wanted an 090G myself, however my 075 isn't bad. Just heavy. It will pull a 5 foot plus car if necessary. Buddy has a 90. Sounds like a MX bike.

Strictly junk. Disposa-saw. Prone to jot vapor locking, marginal cjain oiling and overall bad Chinese quality. Sold by Emerson Electric and comes in an overseas container.

Iff'n I were to buy one tomorrow, that'd be the saw. Light, super-strong, up to 25" bar.... better for an old fart than the 046 Magnum I've had for years. I'd consider it a "medium-sized" saw.
Certainly much more $$ than the OP is looking at for a 271 or 291.
Never had one, but the "Auto-tune" or whatever Stihl calls the computerized control, scares the hell outta me.
A buddy had a big new Husky that wouldn't start, and it was a frigged up computer thingy.....They had to replace it, because the dealer couldn't make it run either.

Some of the discount hardware stores sell Stihl’s around here so they must be junk too? Maybe sitting on your throne you don’t know this, but every manufacturer makes many grades of equipment to sell for different markets.
