Recommendations for retaining wall work...
I'll start by saying I don't know whole lot about tractors. My dad had a B20 when I was a kid... I love digging holes with that backhoe.:D
My wife and I are going to build a new house and I guess I'm looking for an excuse to buy a tractor. I plan to do my own landscaping. Our lot will require us to build a retaining wall for a walk out basement. Looking for a recommendation for a Kabota tractor that could do the job of both building a retaining wall out of stone/boulders and the work of grading the yard. I realize that a compact tractor for this kind of work may not be very fast but to me it's not about the speed but about having fun and maybe teaching my boys a few things.
Thanks in advance, and to be kind this is my first post!

I would say I'm looking currently for an L series tractor ... am I headed in the right direction?

I would say that "L" will do fine - I take it, that you want to keep the kUbota around a while - other wise rent a mini-hoe.

As for the model, the B with FEL/HOE will work wonders too. The Bx23s will do it too - mind you, a bit slower - but a bit less in the seat of the pants, aka the wallet!:D:)

Retaining walls often require engineering and a permit. Landscape walls (less than 4 feet high) don't. Over 4 feet? Build two stepped landscape walls.

Your area laws may be different.

85Hokie...thanks for the recommendation... I do plan on keeping the tractor. I'd like to set my boys up with a little landscaping business. In an effort to be kind to the wallet..does anybody have a recommendation on a older L series tractor and backhoe that would do the job. I'm guessing I would be building the wall out of boulders that are 18"-30" in diameter.

You will love an L. I have an L3560 and will be handing it to the grandkids at some point.

I have no idea about your property, but when you mention building a house , grading, and retaining walls that screams mini excavator to me. It would not solve mowing or moving materials quickly from point a to b. though. However riding mowers are fairly cheap and you could you a dump trailer and skiff out it. - Just my thoughts.

If you're planning on a bunch of serious backhoe work, I'd recommend a true TLB. Not an add on backhoe. I'm a little biased but I love my L48. I was originally looking for a L35 or L39 but have had no regrets on going larger.
Keep in mind no matter how big of a tractor you get, you will always come across a rock too big to move!
