Hello everyone... my name is John.
Looks like I found the right place for a little help and a place to find answers to keep on track.

Just acquired a B7100 D HST, maybe someone can tell me where to start.
What exactly do I have?
Engine says Model# is D750-AH
16HP 2800 RPM

The engine I'm sure is worn out and needs freshened up...Lots of blow by out the vent tube specifically under load, blue smoke and doesn't seem to have any guts.

I'm not sure what is going on with the 3 point hitch either...I'll get another detailed picture.

My tentative goal is...to get rotary tiller for a 100' x 60' garden and mow ~3 acres, possible get a small brush hog for remaining 2 acres of field.

1. freshen engine
2. clean and paint/ moderate restoration of looks
3. go through mower deck freshen bearings and belts

Am I crazy for chasing repairs or should I sell as is and go with something newer?
I like to tinker and work on things but don't want to throw my money away either...

No, not IMO... it doesn't. Lot's of blue/ black smoke too.
Once started it doesn't smoke a lot from the exhaust but really blows from the vent.

I'm sure there will be a million questions and I promise I will look first but a couple of things I can't seem to figure out are,

Where is the alternator?
Does this engine have a water pump?

I run this and it overheated, developed a leak in radiator.
I fixed it replaced antifreeze and seems to be getting hot again.

What are some of the things that can make it overheat?

That's the last model of the B7100 HST, you can tell by the lugs on the front.
The newerr models did not have decompression (it's a system that revives the compression on an engine to make it easier to start).

No there is no water pump, it's called a thermo siphon system, heat moves the water.
The fact that it has low compression and lots of blow by, would be one reason it's running hot, other causes is crud in the fins of the radiator, or on the inside, the other reason would be a bad head gasket or cracked head.

There is no alternator, only a Dynamo (similar but not the same) , it's located where you would thing would be a water pump.

Go to Kubotabooks.com and download the ops manual and the three part WSM (service manual) for that tractor.

That has a modified set of three point arms, they just run the mower deck, you can get the standard arms but they are hard to find.

AS NIW said.....there is no water pump - keeping the fins crystal clean is a must .......air/ water / light brushing - whatever gets it clean......

dont use a 50-50 mix, use a 70-30 mix water-2-antifreeze......

cap = 13 psi cap?

The number stamped on the frame below the tags in your photo B7100 followed by 5 or 6 digits is your serial number. Tractordata.com can tell you year of manufacturer up to 1994, but these were made until 96-98. Your local dealer can tell you the year by serial number if it's after 1994. I have the same exact tractor, great work horse. Awesome snowblowing machine with the B2650 blower on it.

I put a 10 psi cap on it, there isn't an overflow tank just a rubber tube that spills on ground.

The hour meter does work and reads 1477, it doesn't seem match the wear on the engine does it? I figured these would get way more service than that.

The tires do look original though.

Unless there was a change.....13 psi was the recommended cap .....and your overflow does not go to a whistle?

DO you have a infrared thermometer ? If so - test a spot at the head/water exit, top of radiator and bottom of metal on radiator......

you should find something close to 200 or a bit higher at head, similar at rad top and then -50/-60 off at bottom of radiator......so the radiator is taking 50 some degrees out of the water.

DO not test at idle - run around and get it hot measure - then measure and idle - measure again......come back with temps.

It's next to impossible to judge wear on a motor based on engine hours. Motor may have not had an oil change in the past 20 years. Radiator could have been clogged with grass clippings while mowing and engine overheated repeatedly as well.

If you haven't done so, do as Wolfman suggested and go to www.kubotabooks.com and download the three part workshop manual and parts manual for your tractor

According to his serial , unless the last numbers read 001,002,003,004 - it is a 93 model year.

You can also look on the outer rim where the bead is on the rear tire - the date for the rims are stamped there.....unless someone changed rims
The years really do not matter - however, even on the new series, there are differences .......

for example - the decomp lever was was on older and the newer style - somewhere after the 90 model they dropped the decomp lever. I have a 90 model that has it and a 92 that does not..... so some 6000 tractors later - changes have been made.

those three books that NIW mentioned are priceless - copy a part number and messicks or colemans eq will bring it right up!

That thing is amazingly clean and rust free. You get the engine running right and a couple good weekends detailing it and you'll have a nice little tractor!

I agree, that thing looks great! Some engines issues it sounds like but once solved it should serve you very well. Would it be worth just paying the dealer to diagnose the engine issues? Not sure how much that would cost, but that may be an option to get you quickly on the right track.

Unless you want to tackle it all yourself, then forget what I said!
