I have a 4WD MX5100 with about 110 hours. Recently I noticed that the front tires have no power to them even though the 2WD/4WD selector is in the 4WD position. The lever will not move from the 4WD position. Does anyone have advice on how to get the selector lever to move? I am hoping that by moving to 2WD and then back to 4WD the problem will be corrected. Thanks in advance for any help offered

Like most 4 wheel drives the lever sometimes binds up. The front and rear wheels will be different in their revolutions (when turning) and will bind the (trans/transfer), lever in this case. Try moving backwards a little when moving from 4 to 2. They can be finicky, but taking off the gear pressure by backing up usually works. The lever only moves a few inches.

I tried moving the lever while backing up and also while moving forward, it still will not move. Any other suggestions? Just like everyone else, I am trying to avoid a trip to the repair shop.

You may have done it this way, but the way you stated it sounds like you were moving. You must be stopped to shift in and out.

Let me clear thing up a bit. I have tried to disengage the 4WD without the tractor in motion, it would not disengage. Then I tried it with the tractor very slightly in motion, still nothing. The selector lever is in the 4WD position but the the tractor itself is in 2WD, no power to the front wheels. Any further ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Ok, how many hours are on the machine? If the FWA is not engaging than take the shield off the propeller shaft for the FWA and check to see if the one of the couplers has sheared the roll pin and allowed the coupler to slide off the splines or one may have taken the splines out.

If the lever is being stubborn, the proper idea was pointed out by the previous posters. I would grab some penetrating and repeatedly spray down the pivot area of the lever/case over days and then try moving it to see if you can get it to break loose.

Is it possible the linkage has slipped and it won't go back due to the linkage not allowing it (already in rear position), and it can't go forward because the shift gate is limiting it? I've had this happen on a vehicle, not a tractor. I'm not familiar with the linkage on the Kubota, just tossing out an idea.

Not possible on MX5100. It can shift into/out of FWA regardless of it's speed or gear position.

I'd guess that the shift mechanism and/or the FWA gearbox are damaged somehow. Not likely in the gear box (I've not heard of it on an MX....L series yes, but not MX). Probably in the linkages. Pull the rod off and see if you can move the link on the transmission. Might be wise to lift the front wheels off the ground just a hair to take any bind out of the FWA, if there is any. If the lever will move, spin a tire...should lock. If lever moves but no lock, remove FWA propeller shaft and check the splines and couplers....have seen more than one with damaged pinion splines and coupler.

Sorry for the delay in responding. My son-in-law fond the problem. The lever to shift between two and four wheel drive had been bent slightly, must have run over a heavy tree limb or something of that nature. He replaced the shift lever and now the problem is solved. Thanks for all of the input from everyone

Glad you got her fixed and back in service.

My L4600 is sometimes a pain to get out of 4WD so now my standard practice is to lower the FEL to pick front tires off ground slightly and it disengages every time.
