Mount winch on top of bucket?

Anyone know much force LA525 or similar bucket can take? Thinking about putting a 8500 LB hydraulic winch on mine, but not sure if the bucket can support that. I'd dig in the bucket and then use it to drag 2-3k logs from woods. I've used chains to try pull stumps out and the ~5k LB tractor spins so I'm guessing I've at least put 3k of pull force and bucket was fine, but how up to how much is the problem is what I'm trying to figure out.

I would be concerned about tweaking the loader frame is the pull were not exactly straight. Why not mount the winch to a 2" receiver cradle and mount that to the rear of the tractor? I had just such a setup that I used with my Jeep. See the picture. I was able to remove the winch from the front bumper to the rear bumper just by pulling a pin and moving the cradle to the rear receiver.

Really depends on the top 'lip' of the bucket ,but adding say a 1/4" x 4" wide flat plate( angle iron better) would probably be more than enough support.

Yea I was thinking of bolting on more metal as an idea.

I don't want to mount it in the back because I wont be able to carry an implement. Idea I had was to mount it 2 inch receiver backhoe adapter, however the problem with that is I can't anchor the tractor in the ground (the backhoe bucket is removed so I can put the 2 inch receiver on). This might be okay if the winch is lower powered and not enough to drag the tractor, however it seems best/safest that you can anchor something in the ground then winch off that.

I also want to use my third function hydraulics for the bucket winch. Electric winches draw too much power from what I read, though it would be nice if someone has any experience with them on tractor.

Another thing I'm realizing is that mower powerful winches (8500 LB) are quite large, so maybe can't even mount them anywhere. Can't find a smaller lower powered hydraulic winch....most of them are actually 10k+

When adding an electric winch to ANYTHING, always add a 2nd battery ! Ideally isolated from tractor power but alternator can charge it. That way if winch kills battery, YOU don't have a long walk home.....

I've also strapped the cradle to a tree, set a battery next to it, and winched away when there is not room for a vehicle. Very versatile.

Bloom makes an 8000# hydraulic winch. Probably expensive

Yea like 6k is too expensive... though that's similar idea.

I found this, which is interesting:

Portable winch that you strap to a tree or maybe even tractor.

If you have SSQA on your FEL, You can get a 1/2" SSQA plate with a reciver hitch mounted on it.
And if you need it to stop the tractor from being dragged put a couple of teeth on the bottom of it, like the skidding winch setup above but WAYYYY cheaper.

I'm starting to think hydraulic winch is a no-go.

I got a quote for bloom winch... 3k before taxes and shipping...no line or anything else too. At that price, you might as well man up and get a front or rear attachment for a little more.

I'm leaning on trying 'portable winch.' The concept seems sound... 2k force and then 4k with pulley. I could anchor it to tractor bucket chain hooks or a big tree nearby. For ~1.5k, you can have all you need. It's truly portable, meaning you can take it with you on hitch deep in woods and position it accurately, but with a tractor winch, you're kinda stuck depending on where you can put the tractor, which is mostly 'on the trail' for me. Plus you don't need to let the tractor keep running as you're positioning/ fooling around.

Also thinking that all I need is a ~4k winch and 8k is excessive. 4k is a REALLY large log and what I'm thinking is only 2-3k max.

Wondering if I tried to power an electric 4.5k LB winch with the tractor and pull 2k logs...anyone know if that will kill the battery? That's like drawing 250 amps and the tractor is rated for 40 amps charging. IDK how much the tractor can keep up based on the specs.

Why not a 3k or 3500lb winch if you have the equipment to double its capabilities? It should pull less amperage.. they use them on UTV's and ATV's all the time and I doubt they have better systems than our tractors. I used a 2500lb on my old Rhino and had another on a Razor...3500 I think.. no problems!

You're not just pulling the weight of the log, but the ground that it's sliding on, rocks, stumps, the friction from branches, etc. You should plan on double the weight of what you intend to pull.
As expensive as a loader is, I wouldn't mount a winch to it. Side loads, leverage on the dump cylinders, and damage to the bucket wouldn't be worth it. I would mount it to a receiver hitch on the front, or on the rear of the tractor, but not the loader. It may work, or it may damage one of the most expensive components on your tractor.

for current draw, look at the manual (should be in the 'specs') or see what rating the inline circuit breaker is. The 2K one here is just 40A.
Remeber when you double the line(add a snatch block) ,your speed is HALF......

Ya I'm looking into pulleys and realizing you can 2x, 3x, or even 4x the pull power if needed.

A 24 inch (at large end) 16 foot pine log is ~2000 LB. Same for oak is 3k. Realistically, I'd want to get mostly 13 foot logs and mostly pine. That's only about 1500 LB for a large log and many will be smaller than that (~1k LB). It seems that a 2k winch with 1 snatch block/ pully should be adequate.

From what I read a 2k electric winch is 120 amps at full load (12v dc). My tractor is only able to charge 40 amps. I'm not that experienced in this automotive/tractor electrical stuff. Does anyone know what this means realistically? How long could I run a winch pulling 2k LB using the tractor battery as it's running?

Are those winches rated for continuous duty? They don't seem to have much cooling.

I don't know if logging winches are different, but the ratings on automotive winches is a little misleading. When you get a 2500lb winch, that means that it will pull a rolling mass of 2500lbs up a 20° incline. That's a far cry from pulling with 2500lbs of force.

Note.. that the majority of the winch's power is at the smallest winding on the drum "One layer" of cable on the drum is where the suggested rate of the winches power is, then 10% less power each layer there after. So this would be something to keep in mind while using a winch.

Yep…and to add to what orangekrush said, normally you want to leave some line on the spool…generally you should have double the winch rating for what ever you think you might want to pull. If you run all the line out that is your business but normally you should paint or tape the line so you know when it comes out the fairlead you know when to stop.
