I have an older Kubota L185, My question is. What weight hydraulic/Trans oil do they use?? The manual calls for a heavy deferential type 85/90. But that seems too heavy to me. I checked the oil that's in the chunk. And it is a clear hyd type oil. So someone must have changed it at one time.

Manual calls for UDT transmission fluid and 80/90 W gear oil in the steering gear box. You can find the manual for free at kubotabooks.com

The transmission and the hydraulic system share the same oil bath. The manual would recommend UDT due to the vintage of the tractor. That may no longer be readily available. The current version is SUDT2. It is strongly recommended for tractors with the HST transmission. If you have a manual transmission (and you probably do) any universal tractor transmission - hydraulic fluid will probably do.

Universal tractor transmission/hydraulic oil in the common sump transmission and rear axle. SAE 80W90 gear oil in the front axle.

as others said - the UDT in the tranny/hydraulics....... and 80w90 in the front end.

you can still get the UDT from your dealer or online - about 5 bucks a quart.

My L185 manual said to use 80/90 gear oil. Dealer said that was what was common at that time. Now they use UDT or similar universal transmission hydraulic fluid.

I personally use Tractor Supply in mine and it has been fine

There are drains on the axle drive cases (inside rear wheels fairly low) that need to be drained out when changing the fluid.

I looked up specs on current UDT2. It's about 25W. By comparison, JD has a lo vis and high vis ones to each side of this. Stuff, even JD's high vis stuff, is MUCH less viscous than 80/90 w gear oil, which is more like 30-50 w motor oil.

Not exactly. SAE engine oil viscosity grade standards are a poor way to describe UTTO but:

SUDT2, John Deere J20D, and CNH Ultraction SSL are all generally described/labeled as SAE 5W20 lubricants.
UDT, JD J20C, CNH Ultraction, and most other UTTOs are generally described/labeled as SAE 10W30 lubricants

All of them are considered SAE 80 (KV100 >= 7.0 cSt) gear oils.

Older tractors like this can use just about anything, UDT, or generic Universal hydraulic is all going to do you fine.
