I picked up a Deere 390 Flail mower at auction for (60$) last fall. I had to do a little welding (1 hour) ,replace an oil seal (12$) and replace the fine cut blades (200$) on it. I love it, it cuts light brush (less than an inch in dia.) good and centipede grass good. On Pensacola Bahia I need to slow ground speed by half and probably sharpen blades. On Cogon grass it does well , but it bogs down if it is more than three feet tall. I love the fact that I can cut past the width of the tractor tires now. It is on a Kubota L4200 DT with about 37 Hp at the PTO.

Wow. Cutters hanging off chains ? I've never seen anything like that before.
Does that work like a bush hog ?
Why are the cutters hanging off chain ? For ruff / thick / overgrown ground ?
Interesting.

Hi Randy,
It works like a tiller, only it spins much faster. Those are actually fine cut blades, the cut and kinda mulch up the clippings, and it cut up pretty much everything, overgrown and lightly wooded.

Its a wonderful machine. No need for shear pins or slip clutch - those little cutters just bounce off anything that is too hard to cut. Cans, bottles, rocks, whatever. The highways crews here use them for cutting the edges and medians.

The county road department uses them alot down here behind the tractor that has the side mower on it. It seems to work great for them when they are having to cut around mail boxes and such. I would like to have one myself.

Re: Anyone Have Experience with Small Flail Mower

I am thinking about purchasing a 41" flail mower made by Value Leader Implements located in Oregon. The flail mower is designed for small tractors with 16 hp. Cost is $1050 plus shipping.

I have done a lot of reading about the differences between flail mowers and rotary mowers. My main concern is a rock or debris being shot out of a rotary mower striking nearby windows, cars, chickens, or children. I have a B7100DT and will be mowing near or around buildings, cars, fruit trees, sheds, well, etc. The ground I will be mowing is lumpy, bumpy, hilly brush. I just want to keep the weeds down and avoid damage to anything.

Does anyone have experience using one of these smaller flail mowers?

Thanks for any input.

I have a small 36 inch flail mower made by MC company, has its own 8 hp engine. It's pretty handy for rough stuff, tight places with high weeds etc. Will mow off anything that you can manage to drag it over.

I'm going to pick up a new to me 3pt boom flail mower tomorrow. As soon as I get everything mounted and use it I'll try to get some picks of it.

My M4500 had a 6 ft mid-mount flail boom mower on it when I bought it. Worked pretty well, but was in the way for what I bought the tractor for. Sold it for a third of what I paid for the tractor & mower together.
