Got this motor for free. It was on its side next to a dumpster. I was told it’s “blow up”... but I couldn’t just leave it.

has compression
has some fuel…we’ll discuss later
and it’s getting air.
pulled the head and it was nice, no surprises.
no internal damage.
motor turns over and the valve train and everything operates smooth.

no fuel shut off solenoid but the pump is “racked” correctly based off how the solenoid actually works.
At this point this point I’ve tried multiple times to start it. Cracked injector lines. Pumped lift pump till no bubbles coming out of the return line.
Im jumping the starter with a brand new 900 cca battery
so I proceeded to check further into the fuel delivery system. broke the pump down to no delivery valves and Noticed number 1 and 2 don’t “pop off” like number 3 did... pumped the LP and they cleared up eventually.
All back together and no start/hard start.
I guess I should add that besides a few missing parts there’s no reason it shouldn’t run. Ie. fuel shutoff solenoid
Break it back down and end up taking the lift pump off bc something just wasn’t 100% with the fuel delivery.
This is where I’m lost… the LP has an arm (or whatever you want to call it) that clearly should ride on some type of lobbed shaft (cam/crank shaft) but there is nothing there. Even in an expanded parts diagram it shows nothing.

I will post a video tomorrow and maybe someone will be interested and knowledgeable.
thanks

This is a picture with the LP removed and you can see there is no lob on the shaft to pump the LP and supply fuel

the engine is a 2006 and I did come across a factory kubota electric fuel pump so I’m wondering… did the electric pump go on the new engine when they repowered what ever this engine came out of?
Tried to post videos but the forum wouldn’t let me.
Going to re-compression test tomorrow with a friends tool just to totally eliminate that possibility.

any input is appreciated!!

that's low but it should run

keep looking....
Yea it’s low but I believe the manual called for a minimum of 350-375(?) psi to run.

would love to hear it run for a few seconds before I but a rebuild kit.
I have no use or idea what I’ll do with this engine but I can figure that out real fast once it runs.
thanks for your input. I’ll confirm compression hopefully tomorrow!

Zeepers, nice find and good project. Those are the most fun!

A few years back I bought a large air compressor tank that had an engine mounted on top. Scrapper (a friend) had to clear out a old building that was being sold and hired to get it all out. That tank was in there and I gave him $100. Discovered the engine was a Lister Petter 12 HP diesel. The engine was like new with an electric starter. It took me longer to get the tank off the trailer then to get the engine started with the diesel fuel that had been setting in the tank.

When I talked to the engineers at Lister he told me the engine was no longer made, but if I keep oil in it it would outlast my grandkids. Was make for the Alaska pipeline and was made to run non-stop. They replaced the oil while running. Cost new was in the neighborhood of $3200.

Very interesting. I wonder if maybe the tank was mounted higher than the engine, so no pump needed ???
