Its time for me to replace a ten year old battery in my late model hst B7100.
After doing a search here in this forum I see that some folks say a 51R is a correct battery.
My owners manual says that the battery type is a 50B24L
I have a cheap group 22 lawn and garden battery in now that has 300 cca.

I am assuming that my owners manual is calling for a group 24 but I have been unable to to search and find a group 24l. It seems that some of the group 24 batteries I find have a length dimension that is too long.

Can someone shed some light as to why a group 51R is mentioned seemingly to contradict what my owners manual says and also why I do not seem to be able to find a group 24L?

I would like to purchase a battery that has more cold crank amps than what I currently have in place.

i don’t think there is a 24L battery. All group 24 batteries should be the same dimensions. Messick’s carries the 50B24L battery if you want to check their site. Or you can go to Napa and they can come close to your size simply by doing a lookup on your tractor model.

Measure the physical size of your battery and get one that is that size or a smidge smaller with the highest CCA you can afford. Go to wally world or NAPA or any place that sells batterys and pull out your tape measure and go from there!!!

In Canada we can buy 24L batteries.

You likely know this but the only significance of the L is to differentiate which side the + terminal is on.

Some manufacturers now put the terminals in the middle of the battery case and thus you can install the battery facing forward or backward to get the + terminal on the side you need it.

I replaced the battery in my B1750, which is similar to your B7100 (battery on left side between seat and fender), last year.

My B1750 also uses a 51R battery but I use a DEKA 651RMF in mine. The 651RMF is of the same physical dimensions as the 51R but has higher capacity and is only slightly more expensive.

Not a common battery so you will likely need to order one.

When I needed a battery for the B7100 I went to the local farm store that sells InterState batteries. Had a 51R in stock, fit perfectly.

Be aware of a manual that is for a 35 year old machine. Specs change with improvements, especially oil, and batteries.

Thanks all for responding!
Dave, I was not aware of what the L signified ! That is the sort of knowledge I was hoping to gain from this thread.

SDT,
"I replaced the battery in my B1750, which is similar to your B7100 (battery on left side between seat and fender), last year."

As a side note, my B7100 (B7100HST-D) has the battery located adjacent to the fuel tank on the right side under the hood.

My son works for a tire and auto center in town that handles Interstates. I have him checking on a price of a 51R for me today.

Thanks again !

My B7100D gear (1979) has the battery located adjacent to the fuel tank on the right side under the hood,
and it has a 51R.
