You can mow at any rpm you want to, as long as the engine isn't lugging down too bad and you are getting a good cut. I never run ours at 540 pto rpm.

Bluegill said it, don't mow with PTO less then 540. You mow at lower RPM and mower will not cut as clean as it should and you may be lugging your engine down. Not good.

"i dont want to tac up to 2400 rpms or pto rating with this tractor..."

Overcome this phobia, it won't hurt your prize! I know it's a lot of work to get a machine back into working order, but those RPM's are actually better for it then running it slow.

D2Cat, I said "I never run ours at 540 pto rpm". ;)

I like 1600-2000 for mowing, depending on what I'm mowing.

I pin my throttle at the little mark for 540 on the tach. Then if I need more power going into a nasty patch, I drop the hammer on the throttle pedal.

Biggest drain on mowing, as far as I've found, is people getting impatient and running the tractor too fast. It's especially noticeable on the HST's where it's easy to 'floor' it in forward when you think that's giving it throttle but you're effectively upshifting in your gears. On my geared L3200, I mow in 3rd if it's over 8" high, I only go to 4th if it's under that.

It's really easy to overheat the unit while mowing if you're pushing it or not cleaning out the radiator regularly. So keep all that in mind and keep an eye on your gauges.

You won't hurt your tractor running at 540 rpms. I don't run mine over that because I see no need for it but they'll sit all day long at 540 and never miss a beat.

Lots of good advise. I run it right at the 540 mark on the tack. As Shawn mentioned slow down and watch the temp gauge. Made this mistake when I mowed for a friend who's property was way past due. She got a little hot but not hot enough to damage anything. Depending on the height of what I'm mowing I use either low or medium and work at a speed that is comfortable for me and the tractor.
