I got an L235 4wd / no implements with purpose of maintaining hard packed with gravel dirt road. 1/4mile? Road is in shiat condition. There is a burmed curve that will need maintaining as part of it. Curve and other section are two track un-level.

What implements along with snow plow would you recommend? Want to keep my eyes open. Later will use for mowing and also clearing small part of an acre property that has alot of light/bush trees etc. and then plant/maintain some trees that bear a large nut that can be pressed for its oil.. which can be used for diesel fuel.

Got to fix engine first.. but want to keep eyes open for implements while at it.

(LPGS) land plane grading scraper, hands down the best implement to maintain a natural material drive.
Much thanx. Is this ok for Hard packed or would I have to do some sort of tilling? first to loosen it up?

Some manufactures have scarifiers (like a box blade) as an option available that will break up the surface more quickly. Once you break it up a little, raise the scarifiers up and just use the land plane. Just set it up, lower and drag it behind the tractor. Most will agree that for a gravel, sand or other natural road surface, the land plane is the easiest and best road maintenance implement available. A lot of folks don't have scarifiers, don't think they are necessary, and are happy with the results.

I think what you will find is that the LPGS that have the scarifiers are lighter in weight. The people that are happy with their LPGS that do not have scarifiers either have heavy units and do not need the teeth or their ground does not get rock hard.

I have 2 different units, a 5 footer that weighs 800lbs and a 7 footer that weighs 1400lbs. My ground can get pretty hard, I do not have any problems grading. From what I can tell from reading about other users, if you have a unit that weighs 150+lbs per foot of width, there is a good chance scarifiers are not needed. ;)

In my opinion, a box scraper with scarifiers would be the tool to get the road in better shape, then a grading scraper might be the better tool to maintain it. The primary difference being whether you need to move material around or do you simply want to cut/redistribute what's there without moving it along. Don't overlook a good rear blade with tilt/angle/offset either, they are very versatile. Probably need to decide what you want to spend first. Start watching your local Craig's List and see what implements are going for.

Thanx for all the input. Im wondering though if my tractor is too small for some of this? Kubota L235 4wd.... that is if I get it running well. Right now it has an engine knock so engine has to be either refreshed you might say or need a totaly rebuild. See http://www.orangetractortalks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15574

They build most of these implements down to a 4' width. If you need smaller than that, well you may need to go in another direction. ;)

Sorry: The managers here have allowed a blue soybean advertisement plop itself right over your pictures. That would be one reason for me not to use that product.

I'm with you. I also avoid company's that use Obtrusive advertising. Buttt..... not sure whose pictures you're talking about in this thread? all pictures appear with no ads for me but maybe its cause Im the who started the thread? Also somtimes discussion board software will default to a default ad image as a place holder for a downloaded picture when there is maintainance going on or some issue has arrisen with loading the image or if image file or the folder it sits in is having issues etc. Use to be the little white box with a red x would show when there is a problem; now a default ad image might be used instead.

I guess I ll pipe in too,, while the dirt plane is one sweet tool and works super on road beds, and never having used one my self I would think it is probably a dedicated tool. While a box blade and be use for many things, still I guess it depends on how you much you have to spend and if you only need one tool,, I have to make one do as many jobs as it can, thought it may not do as nice a job as one dedicated for the propose. So I would say a good box blade

I have been researching this myself, seems the longer the implement the better. My situation forces me to turn around and back up, so a unit with guage wheels would be my preference. Im limited to weight as the l1501 is a little small for a heavier tool.

Interested to see what you choose

Hands down a box blade is a better multi purpose implement. If the OP can only afford one implement, then a box blade would be the implement to get. My impression was he was mainly concerned with his 1/4 mile long drive. Then the box blade is not the best implement to have. If he gets either a heavy unit which may be hard to find in a smaller unit or a unit that has rippers which are becoming more common, he will be good to go in my opinion. ;)

Well since I'm a newby I hope you wont mind me asking for a little clarity.

.You mentioned "longer". Are you referring to distance from rear or tractor to implement or Width?

. Gauge wheels?

As to what to get first... I to am thinking rear box blade or rear scraper? blade cause I can move snow with them too. I make can make a ripper to last long enough for a few passes to loosen stuff that I can thing rearrange with either of the above. Or even a cheap old set of plow blades for that purpose to start with. Would just take a lot of passes but I got some time. Then later when $$$ allows it and I bring in "road base" and Top material then a Plane would make more since cause it looks perfect for the years of maintenance after that.

The sides on my 7 foot LPGS are 7 foot long. You will be hard pressed to find any that are that long today. Most are about 5 feet give or take 6". The longer the sides, the flater your surface will be.

A rear angle blade digs when you dont want and is in the air when you want it digging. Nature of the beast. Imagine it with a pair of wheels trailing behind six feet, so it doesnt follow tractor down through a pothole. Wheels will hold it up and deposit gravel in the hole instead of making hole longer. A box blade will carry enough to fill holes in many cases. Still quite a bit of fooling with the three point. The greater the length of the implement the easier to get it flat.

Grading is also something that just plain takes a lot of seat time to get better at. For me it's a lot like driving, I'm constantly adjusting my 3 point up/down in tiny increments to change where and how much it cuts or glides just like you make tiny steering corrections even on a straight road. It takes time to develop the feel for it. Get a box scraper with rippers and start working it, experiment with depths and angles, you'll find out what combination works best for your machine and dirt.
