How do I identify my FEL on L225?

Just bought an old L225 with a front end loader that has no ID numbers on it. One cylinder is leaking and I need to know part number for repair kit. I have read that a BF400G was a stock loader on that tractor but how do I know? Also where is a good place to get repair kit?

L1730 and L1720 are also possibilities. If its just a rod seal leaking a hydraulic repair shop can probaly match it up. If its also leaking internally I would just replace the 40 year old cylinder with a new aftermarket one.

Post some pictures of it, that might help narrow it down.

You could consider taking the cylinder to the local hydraulic shop.
This is exactly the thing to do. They'll mic the components and have replacements and install them. If something inside is not usable they will let you know.

An example: needed to rebuild two cylinders on a Bob Cat skid steer. A couple of years ago, dealer wanted $44 for kit and did not have it in stock. Went to local hydraulic shop. They could have them later that day and $11.

This is probably the way to go...there are several shops within 40 miles

Well I took the old cylinder to a repair shop yesterday and the guy was very honest, saying he hates to turn away business but my cylinder would take a lot more work than it's worth. He also mentioned that on these older loaders the rod itself would often bend and need to be straightened. My rod was not bent, but scratched in several places.

I told him I had found this one for $180 and he said he couldn't compete with a rebuild at that price. https://farmandranchdepot.com/clevi...ulic-cylinder#product-details-tab-description

I ordered this one rather than the Northern Tool one because it was cheaper and had free shipping, besides having a bit higher PSI rating.

He did caution that the specs needed to be exact or I'd have problems with uneven lifting and probably destroy the new cylinder.

That's been my experience with cylinders this old. But I replace them in pairs for exactly the reason he gave you. If not you need to make sure the rod and cylinder diameters are exactly the same. Current Kubota cylinders are metric which makes that interesting....

Wait...I just reread this. Are you saying the CYLINDER diameters have to be the same? The throw is the same and so is the length, but the rod and cylinder? Why is that?

If the diameters are different one will generate more force than the other.

Well thanks, you probably saved me some money. So I ordered the other one today. Anybody interested in a working bucket cylinder for a 1980's loader?
