High oil pressure

Been getting good information from this site for a while, but I couldn't find anything directly related to my current concerns with my L345DT.

My idiot light came on for oil pressure so I checked with a good mechanical gauge and to my relief it was not low so the sender was bad. However it did seem high, it was 65psi at idle and 85psi at 2000rpm after warming up (70 to 100 when cool) I left the mechanical gauge stuck to the dash with a magnet while working the tractor for a while and noticed that when it got hot the pressure would drop to the exaxt operating range of 45(idle)-65(2000rpm), but if not working the tractor (just moving about the property) it would cool some and go back up to the higher pressurs again.

Is this an oil issue? I am using rotella 15w-40 and we will be heading into -20deg weather. The manual said to use 10w-30, but everyone around here runs the 15w-40 in thier diesels. Should i use rotellas 10w-30 synth blend?

Also does anyone have an oil flow schematic? I checked the relief on the oil filter block and it seemed fine, but does that actually regulate pressure or is it just a bypass for a cloged filter situation?

Thanks

Most (((MOST))) , not all , pumps have a pressure regulator valve in them. If they don't, then they have the ball and spring that you saw. I wouldn't be worried about that pressure.

Thanks ipz2222

I am going to switch to 10w30 for the winter and see if that helps.

If it dosn't help and gets worse as it gets colder I will look for another relief valve at the pump.

As far as the oil goes there's no reason for using 15w40 in your tractor. No, it won't hurt anything but your fuel economy. That said 10w30 would be a much better choice. My personal preference would be full synthetic but that's just me.

You can get a 5w-40 in rotella synthetic, I am not sure if they make a 5w-30 or not, but I run the 5w-40 in my vw diesel which is what it calls for. I would think the 5w would be a better choice for that cold of weather.

I wouldnt worry about the oil pressure, sounds fine to me.

Thanks again, my concerns arn't concerning me so much anymore. I also like the thought of spending less on fuel.

I will post the results (if any) on the change in pressure when I get the oil changed out.

The results were not too impressive for the pressure change, but I definitely noticed the rpm response to throttle position is quicker. The first pic is 15W-40 85psi at 1980rpm. The second pic is 10W30 83psi at 2000rpm. The water temp looked the same for both but hard to say. My throttle lever was in the same position for both oils.... so the 20rpm difference must be due to the lighter oil.

I am frustrated by the oil price and availability difference between canada and the USA. 1gal of rotella 10w-30 non synthetic in Canada 28$, 1gal in USA 16$ (synth blend). I ended up buying some ultramar 10w-30 super plus for deisels which I had to buy by the case and still cost 12$/gal. Superclean degreaser: 7$/gal usa----19$/gal canada, brake cleaner: 2.50$/can usa---5.00$/can canada. I am stocking up on my next stateside visit!

sorry i think i have gone off topic:)
