The units in my price range have been between 2004 to 2009. One of my key concerns is the ability to climb and descend a moderately steep hill behind the new home I will be building. Any recommendations for years to avoid or any other advice would be welcomed.

My 2014 X900 will climb a 30-45-degree slope (no kidding) in H - gear, two wheel drive* very easily as long as I don’t mash the “go-pedal” too far toward the floor. Just give it about 1/3rd pedal….and it’ll climb a wall.

*-it does require 4WD if wet… and L-gear if more than 3 people are aboard. (we have a school-bus seat for 3 mounted in the bed.)

Don’t know about the 900s.

Great idea about the school-bus seat. That would be perfect for my visiting grandkids.

One of my concerns about the climbing/descending capabilities is if the transaxles used in any of the earlier years are not up to the standards of the more recent versions. That's a big reason for my question.

I managed to find a brand new UTV in the crate at a dealership last year. Was the same price as used ones. I bought it because I sold my 20 year old golf cart for more than I paid for it within 24 hours of posting the ad. Prices have gone mental IMHO.

Good luck on your search.

I have a 2006 RTV 900 with 2700 hrs. Bought new. I use it on the farm for utility work and keeping an eye on everything, which includes some steep hills. It goes everywhere I want. I normally drive in mid range around the farm, but put it in low on steep climbs and descents. I'd want to know the history of any RTV in the age you are looking. Good luck.

I rode in an older RTV 900 last week.
This particular machine was beat to sh_t.
Was only good for short jaunts.

Just saying, be selective if you're looking at used machines.

From your feedback, I would feel comfortable going back to at least 2006, so long as it seems to check out from the description, questioning the owner, and a test drive.

The only way I am buying a side by side that is that old is has to be a true one owner, low hour machine on a estate sale. Most side by sides that old have had many owners and have been beat. Side by sides are not cheap to rebuild.
