Mine did not come with one and I am wondering what benefit it provides?

If I had one on my lawn tractor, the front lip on my mower deck wouldn't have dents from the occasional encounter with roots.

Mine Woods is so bent up I dont think I could get it to bolt up

I have a similar wheel in the center of my mid-mount mower, even though it's a suspended design and not ground contact.

Betting it's still saved some bumps/bruises from roots like @PoTreeBoy mentioned.
