40 miles south of Kansas City
Big Brutis, a stripping shovel. It located in SE Kansas near West Mineral, Ks. There were a few larger shovels made but they were all scrapped.

I worked for a guy who farmed in the area and one day he was showing me his bean field. While riding in his truck I notice the boom off in the distance and asked him what it was, so he drove down to it. We were like two miles away. When we got there it was enclosed with a 6' chain link fence, but the fence had been cut so we could get in to see it.

The size truly is mind boggling. Above the tracks is handrail. On the platform in that area was a pop machine, and it looked like about the size of a soda can! 160' boom, 16 stories tall. They had a crew going along side installing power poles to provide power to it. It went about fifteen miles south then came back north. The farmers saw how much damage was being done to get to the coal they all agreed to not lease any more property to Peabody Coal, and it cause them to shut down.

It sat for years, but was eventually painted and made into a museum. I had gone back before it was declared a museum and was able to walk to the top. My wife went up there also, and when we got to the top it was another "one of those feelings" that you don't get much in life.

Here's some more pictures.

And we bitch about the few gallons of hydraulic oil we place IN our tractors!!!

The amount of oil in that machine would cost more than most of our tractors NEW:LOL:

Mr Peabody and his strip mining raped a monumental amount of this country. An ode in his honor and one of my favorites - written decades ago but still pertinent today:

Sadly we lost John to Covid....

Ya, some of those stationary coal draglines in southern Ohio were so large that, they had to build them on site.

There is a dragline bucket along the road in Miner's Memorial Park in SE Ohio that is so large, it holds an entire HS marching band. Photo attached to the bucket to prove it! 220 cubic yards, from the largest dragline ever built (Bucyrus-Erie), called Big Muskie (total weight: 14,000 tons). Used a FIVE INCH cable!

Been there, seen that.

Wife and I visited big Brutus several years ago.

It was pretty interesting doing the tour and seeing the size of it in person.

Enjoyed seeing those types of machines on television.

It’s amazing they can toss those buckets around like they do.

There was a little one in a gravel operation down the road. Bucket was “only” maybe 30-40 yards, but still a huge machine.

I remember when the Muskie was crossing the interstate in Ohio many years back,,, they put down several feet of earth because the Big Musky was a walker not a crawler. Had the interstate shut down for sever hours till she got across and they cleared the dirt off the high way,,, was quite the undertaking

Skeets - I think that Big Muskie might have been one I saw on television. Remember it walked. Muskie rings a bell.
