I'm looking for a convenient way to drain coolant from my B2601 in preparation for installing an engine block heater. I don't see a drain plug and the owner's manual section for changing the coolant (pg65) just says to ". . . disconnect the radiator hose (engine side) and remove the radiator cap." I envision making a big mess of spilled coolant if I attempt that. Also, disconnecting from the engine side seems like the high-side in terms of elevation, which would not allow complete draining.

I see an item Kubota calls "Hose, Drain" (Item #070) on the parts drawing. Is this the coolant hose the manual is talking about? If I was completely draining coolant for replacement, it looks like I would merely disconnect the drain hose at the engine (clamp item #090) and remove the radiator cap. This would probably empty all of the radiator through the hose (directed into a container) and most of the coolant from the engine through the port. I think I could do that with minimal spillage.

For the purpose of installing the block heater, I just want to drain enough coolant to have the level below the heater port on the engine block, which is an NPT threaded port just above where hose clamp item #090 attaches the drain hose. The port is partially visible on the drawing. Another post described removing the heater port plug and quickly inserting the heater, but I want to have a little more control over the situation and not need to rely on my cat-like reflexes to get the heater threaded properly while coolant may be spilling out.

If anyone has experience with this scenario, or with B2601 coolant replacement in general, feedback would be greatly appreciated.

How hard is it to get to item 080 in the diagram?

Yes - it will make a bit of a mess - btdt.

Cannot believe there is not a petcock on the radiator! AND if there was - I have had them break off at the stem.

I'm hoping to not touch Item #080. I would only mess with Item #090 to disconnect the drain hose at the engine and if I somehow ruined the clamp, I would just use another hose clamp. In fact, the engine block heater kit comes with a new hose camp that is the correct size. It also comes with a plug that appears to be sized to plug the drain hose. I speculated about the purpose of the plug in another thread about engine lock heaters, but now I wonder if the plug and clamp are supposed to be used temporarily to keep the radiator from draining thru the drain hose while the block heater is being installed.

I would let some coolant drain from the block with the drain hose disconnected, but leave the majority of the coolant in the radiator by using the plug.

Bottom of radiator has a drain on it, going off of memory, right in the center, kinda tough to get to, but it drains well. As I remember, it was a slotted head plastic "screw" type deal. As new as the 2301 is, should come right out.

I looked all around for one the other day and didn't find a drain plug. I'll have to look again. The radiator drawing is not any help-- it does not show that detail and doesn't show a separate drain plug part.

Just replaced a threaded in block heater in a hundai suv. Its a vacum fill setup from what i can see. Threaded okd heater out and quicky popped new one in. Lost 1 litre of coolant. Leave rad cap on and clamp overflow hose.

This is what I use for the car and tractor, Home Depot has black plastic mortar mixing tubs which are perfect for such a job to minimize the mess. The medium pan holds 10 gal for about 7.00 and the large pan holds 20 gal for about 14.00. They are very sturdy and are about 8" tall. search concrete mixing tubs & pans.

If my B2601 has a radiator drain plug, it must be too buried and difficult to reach to be much good for me. I just can't find it. I also need to get off my butt and put a Work Shop Manual on order too-- maybe that has more detail.

I like the tip about the mortar mixing tubs. I'll have try one of those. :)
