D722 sat for a long time won't start

I have a 2005 D722 that came from a Carrier reefer unit. It seems to be in good shape. It has sat for at least 10 years.
I put fresh oil and filter in it and added an electric fuel pump and some wiring to control the two solenoids that it has. The first solenoid controls the shut down and the second one controls the throttle. My understanding is that the top lever on the injector pump assembly is turned CCW to shut down the engine and the second lever (under the first one) goes CW to increase throttle. The glow plugs pull 30 amps dropping to 20 or so as they heat up. I have fuel coming out of the return line. I loosened the connections at the fuel injectors on 2 cylinders to see if there was fuel there and there are a few drops present, but no pressure when cranking the engine. There is no fuel in the return line from the injectors. There is a drain petcock underneath the injector pump which when opened it drips fuel at about 5 drops per minute (with the electric pump running). I have tried restricting the return line to see if anything changed. There was no effect. I have removed the triangular cover on the front of the block of the injection pump and the visible end of the shaft is turning. Both the throttle and shutdown levers move easily. The engine was removed from the reefer trailer because the trailer was stationary and permanently plugged into an electrical source so the diesel wasn't needed.
I plan to run a belt driven Markon generator with this engine.

I'm looking for ideas for why there is no fuel getting to the injectors.
Does anybody know what the petcock drain is for?

I'm not sure what the pit cock is for but many diesels have one to bleed the pump. You say it drips if opened while electric lift pumps is running. Have you opened it while lift pump is running AND engine is cranking over as when starting engine?

On mine there is only 1 solenoid for fuel cutoff. The lever it attaches to is spring loaded and is moveable by hand.

Seems like you're not getting fuel as it should really churn itself out - not dribble.

Forget about glow plugs and throttle (for the moment) and get the fuel into and from the injection pump squirting out the injectors first. I don't know if you could find any diagrams on kubotabooks.com or not. That website is not accessible to me here in Canada.

I tried that this afternoon. Lift pump running and cranking the engine. Sometimes there were a few more drops of fuel. I ran the lift pump for several hours and tried cranking the engine every hour or so. Still no fuel at the injectors.

Possibly the rack is stuck in the closed position from sitting. I'm not sure at this point how to tackle that.

The id sticker says D722 ES and that it meets 2005 emissions standards. It seems like a nice little engine. Carrier (Transcold) adds an aluminum 8 litre oil pan and a bigger oil filter. It also has a really nice fuel filter. I'm in Canada too. Other coast. I will look more online for info on the injector pump.

The injection pump is probably gummed up.
You will need to pull it and have it rebuilt.

Here is an update on this engine.
I pulled the injection pump and the rack was indeed seized. Also, the roller lifter for cylinder 1 was very hard to push in with my thumb and slow to come back out. The other 2 lifters were fine. The engine internals looked very good and clean. Rather than take the injector pump apart, I decided to try cleaning it in an ultrasonic cleaner. I put in 3 litres of diesel and some Gumout diesel injector cleaner and put the whole works outside under an inverted tote (box). I check it every day. The rack now moves well but slightly more drag in one direction than the other. All the roller lifters move up and down about the same. I will leave it in until everything feels good and loose. Then I plan to drop the bottom end (the rollers) in some engine oil for a bit to replace what was probably washed away by the diesel. It is not a fast solution but I'm not in a hurry.

If you can't get the pump working here's a place to go shopping. They are good, reasonable and ship to you.

I put it back together. The pump was clean and the rack moved freely. It starts (with the glow plugs) but will only run for a few seconds. There is fuel coming out of the return line (electric pump). I cracked the fittings at the injectors and there is fuel to all the injectors. Could there be an injector issue with sitting for a long time?

Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions about what the problem could be.

Taking a stab. The fact it starts, says fuel is getting into the cylinders so kinda thinking it eliminates the injectors as an issue. Maybe an air lock or some other dellivery issue?

Thanks. I am thinking you are right. I went back and tried a few more times. The last try it ran much longer and showed me that my ratchet straps holding it down weren't up to the task. It stopped when I turned the key off. I will figure out a better hold down before I try again.

If it dying when you stop cranking it, you have a stop solenoid issue.
