Maybe I'm making too much of this. My GF1800 dipstick has four level marks and "685" stamped between the four. This is different than anything I see in the OM or WSM.

I changed the oil and put in 3.2 qts. as specified in the WSM and the level is just below the second mark.

If the second mark from the bottom is the correct one for "max" oil level, what are the others for?

All of the marks in the center are just die stamps, ID symbols and #'s, the level marks are the very top and very bottom marks, and yes it's a pretty wide range. ;)

Bradmond: I should have thought of that - it is the part number - thank you!

Wolf: yep that is a huge range but maybe it's because the dipstick is at an angle relative to the oil level - in any case, I'll keep the level between to the two extreme marks at either end.

Thank you both!

Seems like the WSM's are wrong on the capacities. I see it a lot. IIRC that engine holds close to a gallon including the oil filter.
