I was watching a youtube video and they sprayed the exposed ram of the hydraulic cylinders with WD-40.

Is this a good idea or is there no need or is there some other product to use other than WD-40?

Not something I've ever done, doesn't mean I'm right. If going for wd40 I think these would be the better choices.

Yes, I also saw such a video. Then I tried. I haven't had any problems so far. Four months have passed.

If it’s of any quality it should be fine. Industrial stuff sits around snd no one is spraying things. Take the cylinder off snd put it on another implement to keep it in use?
I’m doing that with my snowblower/ rear blade. But I’m cheap, for now.
if you don’t use it the seals may or may not last as long either, no use is almost worse than daily abuse.

I want my rams kept dry so that dirt wont cling to them and beat up my wipers.

If... I am storing something outside, in the elements, I'll wipe down the ram with water proof lube as a rust preventative. Then before use, I wipe them off.

Hard chromed rams need nothing in the way of corrosion protection, they won't corrode. 6000 hours on my one unit and the FEL cylinders have never even been wiped off.

On another forum were discussing leaking cylinders on a front mount blower. My second hand county plow that goes on the M9 in the front, sits outside all year, sat out at the county garage all the time and the power angle cylinders don't leak a bit and have never rusted (rams) at all and they are always close to the ground too. Sits on blocks all the time, outside next to the barn. If one leaked, I'd just replace it, they aren't that expensive anyway.

they are chrome faced

they won't rust...UNLESS they get nicked, dinged or bent, which would compromise the chrome and expose the steel underneath. That is what's going on with my massey ferguson. Nicked rods from abuse but what do you expect from a $600 tractor.
