Could you spread them out a bit so they don't get as hot, to minimize the risk of a fire starting?

The pile is composting.
If you turn it, you'll just fire it up again.
Spreading it out will slow it down.

See if you can get a temperature near the core. 150F is not uncommon, and not of much concern.
We use compost thermometers that have a 3-foot long probe.

what you do depends on what you got them for...
to use as 'chips' aka ground cover or mulch , you need to move the pile ,spread it all out to STOP it breaking down

to use as 'compost', you need to turn/mix the pile every few days,to keep it decomposing. Unless it's totally composted, the chips will take nitrogen from the veggie garden soil...NOT a good thing !

BTW any Black Walnut in the 'chip' will kill off tomoatoes and peppers and a LOT of other veggies !
