I need to know if the reason for low oil pressure at idle is possibly the cam plug on this model or am I more likely chasing worn rod and main bearings. After hard use the oil light flashes at idle and I have also checked the pressure with a manual gauge, it is low enough at idle that the sender is not suspect.
Also the manual gauge pulsates a couple of psi; is this normal? I don’t recall seeing this on any automotive type vehicles.
It has between (5 and 10) psi at idle and (35 to 40) psi at governed top RPMs. I have tried several different oils, viscosities and filters with no resolution. I have looked inside the valve cover and it appears that there is no sludge or gunk; therefore I do not suspect the oil pump pickup being restricted.
It has just over 1000 hours; it has also been used hard but maintained well and runs like a fine watch.
I have read some posts on here about the TSB for the cam plug but mine does not fit most of those symptoms as it does develop good pressure at speed.
Any inside knowledge or insight with this will be appreciated.

From what you've stated it does sound like the bearings are just worn and tired or possibly (rarely) worn out oil pump.
It sounds like it's a good candidate for a motor rebuild!
