I went out to check my fuel filter and things went down hill from there. I replaced the filter not too long ago and never had a problem. Today I followed the procedure in the manual. Initially it started and i closed the vent plug 2. Right now it tries to start but dies. Turn it off and fuel runs out the vent tube. Turn off the fuel cock and it will start easy and run for awhile until there's no fuel in the system. Gave up, taking a break. Where did I go wrong? With the fuel cock open the vent tube will still leak.

I would be suspicious of the fuel pump but I do not know your specific tractor.

On many machines, if the tractor is on level ground and the tank fuel level high, gravity will deliver fuel to the injection pump.

Start driving up hill or with low fuel level in the tank and now gravity cannot deliver the fuel and the lift pump is needed.

From the parts illustration your fuel pump is mounted on the side of the injection pump. Any air leak on the suction side of the pump will be a problem. Check hose and clamps too.

You should not be able to have a leak out of the vent from the fuel filter housing because it should have a line from that vent up to the jet start valve on the side of the injection pump.
Close the fuel shut off, change the filter, open the fuel shut off, open the jet start valve blead the air out of the filter housing close the jet start valve, done.

I want to thank you all for responding and offering your expertise. It was a stupid mistake I made, but what the heck, at 78yrs old I'm allowed to. Never mix up your vent lines. No reason to remove them. :)
