I use my tractor year round here in the north woods. I looked at my filter the other day it was marked 4/21/16- 196 hrs, my tractor now the 1st of March has 252 hrs on it. So 56 hrs since I changed my oil last April. I bought a Kubota filter at the dealer and Rotella oil at tractor supply when I changed it in April. So by April 21 I might put on another 5-6 hours maybe. My stupid question because I live here in the north and we've had -20*f below and 65*f one day in January , hot, cold , condensation ect, would I be smart to just change my oil yearly ? I'm not Trump but it wouldn't break me. I also thought about changing just the filter with low hours on the oil. The guy who works for me has a chevy 2500 that he uses Mobil 1 in, he puts on like 6k miles a year. at 3k , he pulls the filter and tops off the oil.
Your thoughts ??

Looking forward to hearing some responses, lots of knowledgeable posters here. Wolfman, tooljunkie, D2Cat, Darren Todd, 85Hokie and others will be along soon to provide us some insight.

I run Mobile 1 synthetic in my Tundra, at 6K I replace the filter and top off oil, change both at 12k. I do the same for our older highlander.

Was considering doing the same thing for my L4600. I have 30 hours on the oil and filter, was thinking about changing filter yearly and oil and filter and some undetermined number of hours 100 or so.

thanks for starting the thread.

WFM,

I have studied oil for a long time seen loooottts of technical data on the synthetic oils vs standard oil and the like.

Synthetic oil have a lower viscosity (pours better at lower temps) than the same weight oil of others - but here is the best point about synthetic oils - it holds the protection lonnnnger than conventional oil OVER the life span of the oil itself. Looking at a typical linear chart - a conv oil starts off at "x" and slowly (as the oil wears) gets to lower protective point "y" over time and heat and cold cycles.......synthetic start on the chart a little lower than "x" and holds onto the protective points longer and higher than point "y" over the same amount of time.

Now all this did not answer your question - so I will go ahead and do so.

IF I was gonna change the filter - cause that is the hardest part of the entire job (on a bx) I would go ahead and change the oil too. Why? - because I can and despite the cost, the $25 is cheap insurance to keep the machine living another year or 30!

The old oil has not been ruined - there is life in it still, lots of life! But, from a cost per life span view, I think I would go ahead and do it! Changing the filter is fine too, I have done that in the past, I run Mobil 1 in all my cars, and would change a filter at 6k and run it to 15k then change the oil, again - the oil is dirty but still works as it should.

Last thought - I would change it to satisfy the "what if scenario" as opposed to the not changing it and that 1% crazy something happening.

I have two B7100 - one has new oil from the old owner .....bet it aint diesel oil...and a fram oil filter......It has only been started and run around the yard about 1 hours since last year this time.....I am gonna change the filter and the oil cause I DO NOT KNOW what's in it...........the other B has maybe 75 hours of grass cutting, it too will get a change, for no other reason because I want to do it rather than it needs to be done!;):)

I'd follow 85HOkie's advise, "Last thought - I would change it to satisfy the "what if scenario" as opposed to the not changing it and that 1% crazy something happening."

A few dollars is pretty cheap peace of mind! Psychiatrist and (dealer)mechanics cost about $90 p/hr!!:D

I used to work for the parent company of Mobil (Exxon). I used to be in the area of blending specialty oils for sales. I totally agree that you should just change the oil by virtue of it just being old (calendar) and not necessarily used up by the machine by running the machine (hours). Oil is a cheap investment for sure. I would say change it out to be on the safe side.

this is one video that makes sense in simple terms of how oil works from a viscosity stand point......and why synthetic oil "lasts" longer than other types. This guy has a lot of videos that are interesting, some with pure facts, some with a little personal bias.

One of the things you said, "we've had -20*f below and 65*f one day in January , hot, cold , condensation ect", is a very good reason to change oil and of course hydraulic fluid and filters as they are even more prone to condensation issues. ;)

That and there is a lot to be said about doing scheduled maintenance early when you're not crazy busy then waiting for the exact hour or day and putting it off because you're got too much work to do...

The bx manual states every 200 h.
I change it every 100.
Most other machines/vehicles state every x miles or time.
The filter traps dirt particles but not chemical contaminates.
Over time this can be corrosive.
So since it has been a year go for the oil change.
As stated an oil change is cheaper than an engine change.
Unless you just signed a $65,000,000.00 book deal!:p
Then you can change tractors ecery 100 hours or 12 months

Ray
P.S. it is not a stupid question
If you waited untill the engine pooped out and then asked, WELL!

Reminds me of my college roommate......changing oil in his chevy camaro, according to the schedule......pulled plug, took off filter - looked him square in the eye, "you replace the plug?" - yeah yeah, he said .......2 quarts of oil found it's way to the gravel driveway!:D:p

Well at least he found it before e started down the road at a high rate of fuel consumption,,lol,, Yes every spring filter and oil also M1. But any good diesel rated oil will work well. Like said oil is cheap,,,,, motors ehhh not so much ;)

Great Advise Gents....Thanks
I have shoulder surgery scheduled for April 21 next month. So I'll get it done before that. Anyone here ever have a rotorcuff tear and need to get it fixed ? I'd love to hear your recovery was quick and you were back to welding in 8 weeks...

Monday a fellow figure skater (vintage like I am) said she had cuff surgery and was back skating in 4 weeks and rehab was a breeze. She is however the only person I've met that said that.....I chickened out and am living with it torn, actually both are, since I can't figure out how to get chores done for that long :D

Rumor is that the exercises are the ticket, but I think a little luck and a good surgeon helps :)

So all the very best luck from us..

It has been many years so I don't remember how long I went to therapy and did exercises. I do remember that when I went back to swimming for exercise the first day was agony, but within a week I was approaching 100% recovery.

Well good to hear. I have ten years till I retire and would love to live pain free if possible(dispite all the other aches)the surgeon does a little bit of 'clean up' while he's there I guess. The oddest thing is I'm right handed, from age 12 on I always was shooting a 16ga and rifles and then went onto 3 1/2" turkey loads and never treated my right shoulder with any care. So my left gives me issues. I don't get it.

I'm in the minority. Unless it's got a milky oil cap, run the oil. I have never seen oil get enough condensation in it that running it to temp for a while didn't resolve it.
