10-15% Below MSRP before or after incentives?

Hello all! I've been reading through these forums while trying to decide which tractor brand and model would be best for me and my situation. Everyone's posts and conversations have been super helpful. So thanks!

I've decided on a new BX1880 w/FEL. I already have a garden tractor for a mower so I don't think adding another $1500 to cost is necessary. I requested a quote from the local dealer and it looks weird. It looks like they decreased the price of the tractor slightly but then INcreased the price of the FEL by the same amount. Should I negotiate the price on an itemized basis or just be concerned with the total cost for equipment? And lastly, in ref to the title, should the typical 10-15% below MSRP be before Kubota incentives or just the total? Thanks friends!

Mark

edit: Quote was $12,951* for a BX1880 w/FEL, bolt on blade, wheel weights(Kubota build site $13,453) or $12,074* for a BX1870 w/FEL, bolt on blade, wheel weights(Kubota build site $13,080)

*after incentives

There is a reason they are called Stealerships. You arent ever going to get some good deal on anything sold at a dealership, tractor, car, boat, etc. Its only about making you FEEL like you are getting some type of good deal.

Id take the bottom line and shop it around. Maybe even manufacture or alter a dealerships "bottom line price" on paper and then take it to another dealership to get them to beat it or come close. Might as well play the dirty game dirty.

While I would not condone creating fraudulent documents, it is a good idea to shop around. Get 3 or more quotes form area dealers and maybe even one or 2 from larger outfits that may ship (Messicks, etc). Get the best deal you can then take that to your local. I would not worry about the individual component price variance...just the final price.

I don't agree with that tack. Reason being, all dealerships have overhead (employees, building, heat, light and taxes and need to either make a profit and cease doing business.

Selling retail tractors, cars, trucks or whatever has never been (and never will be) a 'not for profit' business.

I know how business works, I have 2 of them. Stealerships manipulate the truth AND numbers on paper to make a buyer feel a certain way about a certain number. Its not illegal, its just manipulative, deceiving. Some people see it and some dont.

What the op describes is exactly that manipulation of numbers, has nothing to do with cost of running a business. Im just saying dont let tricky numbers fool you, shop around.

Def gonna shop around. There are a couple other dealers in the area. I guess that kinda answers my questions on the quote. Incentives, below MSRP, itemized price, etc... is almost irrelevant. Final dollar amount, however you get there, is whats important.

Much like buying a car/truck....
I dont care what you pay me for my used car/truck
I dont care what the cost of the new one is

THE bottom line is the bottom line....

Look at all the parts/pieces of what you want or need.....
then look at the bottom line -

All the taxes will be the same more or less - so that is not a figure that matters ......the cost of the parts whether that are discounted to not, they all add up to a single figure! SOMETIMES is not always the best idea to go with the low ball dealer. - depending on who you will deal with locally.

AS of the past couple of years it WAS typical to have 10-12% off the list price on Kubota.com. Now days not so sure - I have heard that they will go up if they have not done so due to steel costs.

As a proud and satisfied owner of a BX1880 I can make a couple suggestions.

1. Make sure the low horsepower model is enough.

I don't have a riding mower and my land is very flat. I mostly mow, and do bucket work. I've been happy with it, though when snow blowing up a minor incline on my driveway I can tell the engine starts to struggle a bit. If you have slopes or if you plan to use a lot of ground-engaging implements like box blades, rototillers, etc you may want to consider the 23 or 26 hp model because it will make a difference there.

2. Make sure you talk to the service department at the prospective dealers.

Do they charge for transportation? How much? What does their service backlog look like, etc. I've read stories from a lot of unhappy folks whose tractors are sitting for a long time waiting for service. I had two dealers just about the same distance from me, but paid slightly more for mine because that dealer had much better service capabilities. IMHO its worth it.

Well I don't think you have to take it to the dealer you bought it from, but, I look at it this way. Selling the tractor is easy. Service after the sale is the hard part. If the dealer is doing the service right, I want to support that and reward their success by purchasing the tractor from them.

Remember you want out the door, delivered price in writing! I would not count on getting 10-15% off on entry level machine.
