My old logging workhorse had a tough break last week. While pushing some logs the steering cylinder shaft snapped and stabbed the engine timing cover/gear case cover right next to the pulley. With over 5000 hours I'm not thrilled about spending $1400 on parts. Just the steering cylinder is $820! I'm also not looking forward to replacing that front cover. Can anyone give me some tips on this? I am quite mechanically inclined, but it would be nice to know how much disassembly I need to do before I get started. Does the radiator need to come out? What size socket do I need to remove the large nut holding the pulley on crankshaft? Does anyone know where I can get a used steering cylinder?
Thanks for the help.
