The sleeve is not tapered and I am glad it is not. Else, it would be very difficult to remove the hay spear. As it is.....it already is a snug and rigid fit.

The end is 'tapered' and threaded. Fits into the sleeve. Then you just tighten the nut on the back side to capture it. When you want to remove it, remove the nut, tap the spear and it comes loose.

I have the same bale carrier. Use it with a box I built for a 'carry all' at times. It is a ruggedly built hay fork...so you can use it to pick up some pretty heavy items (logs, etc) and not damage it. I wouldn't use it in 'place' of forks on a FEL....but it does have other useful functions...
