We have a sewer easement that loosely follows the creek that bisects our place into north/south sections. We use it for hunting (deer, turkeys, and everything else crosses it and grazes it at some point during the day) and as a driving trail. Some parts are as much as 80’ wide; others (such as the area below) are pretty narrow.

Couple days ago, loaded up a pole saw, limb loppers, and a little electric chainsaw that looks like a toy but is actually pretty sweet for pruning. Took the Mule from one end to the other trimming limbs that were encroaching far enough they created problems running the Mule through without hitting limbs or causing a need to fight limbs when bush hogging. Mow it only once or twice a year, but I still don’t much care for fighting limbs with both hands while steering with my left knee while bush hogging even if it is only once a year. That left piles of limbs. Next couple days were filled with higher priority tasks, but today took the tractor and grapple to sweep up the brush. View attachment 174832 Being this isn’t a yard, tilting the grapple just shy of the teeth digging in and floating the boom allowed sweeping the limbs into pretty decent grapple loads without manually handling the limbs. There was one area the ground was too rough and uneven to do that. Still, a little over 2000’ of sewer line with probably 750’ having limbs laying on the sides took about an hour and a half for one guy who sometimes qualifies for the senior discount to sweep up and pile into two brush piles off the sewer line. I’m good with those piles creating small animal habitat until they rot down. Would have taken the better part of a day to do that by hand. View attachment 174833 View attachment 174834
After that, got my father’s old Troybilt tillers out of shed to get them cleaned up a bit, at least enough to read the serial numbers so @MOOTS can get me a little more info on them. ((Thanks @MOOTS!)

They weren’t terrible, but they had enough dust, dirt, and hardened grease obscuring the serial numbers a pressure washer or steam cleaner was a near requirement. Shed isn’t near any of the shop areas, so after pondering options decided to load them up on the little mower trailer and knock some of the dirt off. Not too hard to load with the trailer aimed downhill and a good running start pushing them up the ramp. They were really easy to unload with the trailer aimed the other way. Just had to be quick enough to not get run over.

At some point when it’s either too hot or too cold to mess with stuff outside, I’ll get them inside to see about getting them running or determining they’re parts only. One has a Tecumseh engine, the other a Kohler, and I know very little about either. Regardless, they need to go elsewhere and they don’t look like scrap.

your utility lane looks great! I have a couple miles of similar. following y'alls ideas.

re: old small engine machines. few years ago I loaded up a trailer full that were just taking up space in the buildings. most hadn't been ran in years with no plans to in the future.

also loaded up some wore out fence trimmers.

donated the whole lot to a local shop that distributes project machines to local high school shop classes.

rather they get some good learning experience working on them than just sending to scrap.

good luck! 🍻

Hadn’t thought of anyone wanting old stuff to work on. If I could load up all the things like that around here and give it all away, that would be ideal. I’ll look into that!

We had a bunch of overgrown landscaping beds cleared up last week. I could have done it...But I'd rather not get covered in poison ivy, so we paid. After that, there was plenty of other landscaping to be done, trimmed a few trees and chipped the limbs yesterday, moved a pallet of mulch, and generally cleaned up around the house before the storms roll in. Also, cut the grass, but use the SCAG for that.

A ‘76 model wouldn’t be a PTO. Shoot me the serial and I’ll date it. PTO’s were first produced in Sept of ‘82.
There was a generator, log splitter and brush chipper available for the PTO models. Stickers are no longer available, but there is a guy on eBay selling very nice reprints. And custompartsinc.com will have everything you need to refresh that transmission.

Thanks for the correction and the info. I had to go back and dig out the invoice to make sure I was wrong.

Dunno where I got '76 from because I just looked at the invoice and it was ordered 10/03/83. It's definitely a PTO because I've taken the tiller diff off it. My folks were still gardening pretty heavy at that time, but my stepdad had a stroke in the early 90's and was bedridden the rest of his life. The Horse was a bit heavy for my mother at 4'10" and 110 pounds soaking wet, so it was pretty much left in the boatshed to ruin. She could start it, but just didn't have the upper body strength to use it. I thought they'd bought it much earlier, but perhaps that was her first Snapper riding mower. I cut nearly 2 acres of grass with a little 22" mower until I left home. THEN they get a rider. Gee, thanks. That was still 40+ years ago and I'll be 68 next month, so I feel like I'm entitled to a little confusion. I've certainly earned it. Unreal what she got a quality machine for. Total invoice was $925.20, including the hiller attachment. Dunno why she bought the hiller because it was never put on the machine until I did after I brought it home with me. Couldn't touch this machine for that price now. The only thing I don't like about it is that it came with the "turf' tires on it, not the ag tires. It still has plenty traction, probably because of its weight, but it just looks better with the ag tires on it, IMO.

So, if I wanted to completely refresh this thing, what would you recommend for seals, bearings, etc? I know the reversing pulley needs to be replaced. The rubber has dry rotted and big chunks of it are missing, so that's quite noisy. But forward (same shaft spinning the other way with the belt) is quiet. Diff for the tiller seems to be quiet as well. But the axle seals are leaking and I'm pretty sure the PTO and Diff seals are too. I don' think there's much gear lube left in it. The tines are completely worn out, too. I don't run it much, but I want to restore it for sentimental value more than anything else.

Is CustomParts pretty quick on delivery and reliable? I don't want to get this thing apart and suddenly find I need one more part that's got a 6-month delivery on it or some such.

eBay has ag tires, about $65 for the set. And yes, custom parts has just about every part to make that tiller as it was in ‘83! The seals and such they sell as a kit which includes every rubber bit needed. I will wish you luck on removing the wheels from wheel shaft, once that is done, these are very easy machines to work on. I will send you parts breakdowns and service manuals here shortly.
Clean cutter tines are the best bang for buck. No grinding required to fit like the Amazon specials.

Another quick mod. I picked up a https://itcquickattach.com/ loader bracket and blank plate to mount a fire extinguisher bracket. ITC has a bracket but I already had one so I went with the blank plate. It has a pin to lock it in place so the mount doesn't fall off.

Consider corking the hose end so bugs don’t find there way in and nest plugging it for when you need it most.

I actually have all the original literature for it too. Even the Bill of sale from TroyBilt and the BOL from the trucking company (Floyd & Beasley). I know where I get my packrat mentality from now. The owners manual and parts manuals are like brand new. My mother never took them out of the wrappers, but the wrappers were so fragile and fell apart when I was taking the books out I tossed them.

Good to know about the “kit” for the seals. I pulled the wheels off right after I picked it up and put tubes in the tires. They have enough dry rot cracks that they won’t hold air as tubeless, but they haven’t leaked a bit since I put the tubes in. Maybe they won’t be quite as hard to pull off this time. I greased the shafts before I put them back on.

Now all I need to do is clean up the shop and make a spot to get started on it. I have accumulated way too much stuff in the past year. Again, that packrat mentality. But it’s hard to say no to a $250 fertilizer spreader for FREE, and a $1000 chicken coop for $50. The missus works at tractor supply and is probably worse than I am about how much storage space we actually have. She constantly makes the mistake of telling me about stuff they’re throwing away. I’m a sucker for anything I think I might be able to repurpose.

Again, thanks for your input and advice. I might have to start a thread on the rebuild.

I'll follow along if you do! I have a PTO horse I got from my dad a few years back. It's been to a handful of small engine shops and good ol' boys who swear it works great. But you try and till anything and it just bogs and dies, he got frustrated and just bought a new Honda rear tine. I'm planning to do a re-power with a Harbor Freight Predator engine I got for cheap just to get it running sooner rather than later. I also have all of the original manuals, although my dad bought it second hand.

Is that four sets of weights per wheel? I have three sets of weights per wheel on the MX for a total of 618 lb and three sets of weights per wheel on the M6060 for a total of 990 lb. That's a very clean install of the weights regardless.

LM8124 weights are 103 lb each so am curious as to how you managed to get 1,280 lb of weight on there.

The ‘ 83 Tecumseh was pretty tired, I’m already a step ahead of you. The original engine used as much oil as it did gasoline, if I could get it started. I think the rings are seized, but can’t find a source for parts, so didn’t open it up. I happened to catch the 6.5 HP Predator on sale for $89, so repowering it was a no-brainer. It’s an easy fit other than the control cable, but it has a control lever on it so no real big issue. The Horse is a beast with that engine.

I thought they were 320 lbs each for 640 per side. I'll update tomorrow when I get in to pay them.

They do look pretty darn thick so maybe one of your weights is equivalent to three of the LM8124 weights, and with one on either side you'd be up around 1,2000 lb. You seem to have some neat options in Canada. (y)

That fire extinguisher set up is cool too.
