Here is a slightly different spin: Once you have decided what you want, go on line and get prices from other sources. Factor in shipping, and take your numbers back to your local dealer. I saved almost a $1000 that way. I also liked going with the local dealer once the arm wrestling was done, as I had him available if problems developed. I had a few minor problems, and my dealer handled them nicely. Good luck with your purchase.
I would really like to purchase from a local dealer but the one that I have been to so far is not even close to what I can get a tractor for in Virginia. On top of that the tax savings. I am not sure how the southern states are able to sell so cheap, maybe because of volume of sales, so they get better pricing. I still plan on hitting a couple others so I can drive a 4600HST before I make my final decision. Decisions, decisions!!:confused:

...up till now I have been using a 1949 John Deere Model M with about 16-18 HP. It has actually done well over the years but it is getting a little tired and in need of a rebuild...
Heh- compared to the M a new Kubota will feel like a dream!
(We also have an old M, same year as yours; I LOVE that old popper!)

The HST is super for using the loader. if you see yourself doing much at all with the loader, I'd give it a good hard look. HOWEVER, if you go that way also consider getting HST "cruise control" - a little lever that lets you take your foot off the HST pedal-- particularly if all you are doing is slow and steady for a long stretch.
I find that prolonged mashing of the pedal, in the same position, is uncomfortable.

 I can see how this tractor buying thing can get really expensive. I thought I was sold on the L4600 and the more I look I see that some dealership (Steens) is offering an MX4700 HST package deal for $200.00 more than an L4600 HST package deal. Now I don't know what to do. The posts that I have been reading pretty much all have said that the MX4700 is a better more capable tractor. Any comments or sugestions??????:confused:

Take a look at the spec sheets on Kubota's website. The MX4700 is quite a bit more tractor for only $200. ;)

Like I said earlier the MX4700 is a MX5100 without the turbo charger. A few less HP, but still the same chassis and lift capacity. The MX4700 isn't a better tractor than the L4600, just larger.

If I needed a tractor the size of a L4600 I'd get that one. If I needed larger, I'd skip the MX4700 and get the MX5100. There, that is another twist for ya to think about.

:confused: I really appreciate the help and comments, but it doesn't make my decision much easier. I am just afraid that if could ever use a bigger tractor I will be kickin myself in the butt for not just going bigger to start with. I still have another week or two before I make a final decison. Thanks again for the input and comments.:confused:

How much more is a MX5100? It shouldn't be that much more than a MX4700, but if it is, just get the 4700.

I don't think you could go wrong with any of them!

The MX5100 is another $2000.00, so that is a little more than I really want to spend at this time but I wouldn't have a problem spending another $200.00:confused:

2k is a bit much for 4 more horse power in the same tractor. Get the MX4700...
It's not just HP, I believe that the hitch is a deluxe hitch with extendable link ends and telescoping anti sway bars vs check chains. I am pretty sure that there is another deluxe option as well. It has been said that to put the options that come std on the MX5100 onto the MX4700, that you would have more in the option costs that what the difference is between the tractors and you have the additional hp of the MX5100. ;)

I know there is a little more to it, but the basic tractor is the same. The options will be worth more to some than to others. I personally would not pay for most of the options, but do like the telescoping anti sway bars (there is another name for them, just can't think of it right now), have them on my L3800.

On the Kubota website, they list them as telescopic lower links and stabilizers. And while you don't care about the extras, so as to help others, it doesn't seem like a good idea to say that the only difference is more horse power when that is not the only difference. With your statement it sounds like a person is paying $2000 for 4 more HP when that is not all that you get for the additional money. ;)

Agreed. I'm just trying to give basic advice here and assuming the individual will look closer at the specs and compare for themselves. Personally, I would go with the MX5100 over the MX4700. But only if the L4600 was too small for my needs.

I have used both the manual gear shift transmission and the HST. I would never go back to manual. The HST I feel is more flexible and easier to use. I use a 6' brush cutter on my 32hp HST machine and I have no problem on hills or anywhere else. I also have a 5 foot tiller and an 8'6" hydraulic v-plow for snow plowing. I feel the HST will aid underpowered tractors use implements a bit better because you have infinite ground speed options. A manual transmission does not have as many options for ground speed control.

Many of the HST machines have cruise control which is also nice. You can get what ever ground speed you want with HST. With HST there's no shifting. My wife can use the tractor without worrying about when to shift or what gear to use. If a dealer is trying to talk you into a manual transmission I may wonder if that's because the HST models are sold out. When I bought my tractor the dealers I spoke to leaned towards the HST models.

In no way am I saying a manual transmission is bad. The are rock solid and reliable. I just the feel the HST is more user friendly.
