So on my farm I use an irrigation reel a fair bit, it's efficient and easy to move. Biggest problem is most of the farm is on a high hill and the water source is down at the bottom. No trouble to push it up there but it's really hard to get that 100-125PSI I want for the gun on the reel.

So a few years ago a guy was selling some stuff and my dad got some of it, just some random irrigation stuff and what turned out to be a low volume high pressure pump.

So all last year I used regular sized tractors to run this as a booster pump just before the irrigation reel. Worked fantastic and saved alot of fuel not having to run at such a high RPM to get pressure up here. I just need enough pressure to get water up here and then the high pressure pump pushes the 10 PSI to 125 easily.

So anyways just on a whim I decided to see if the old ford 8N could run this little booster pump as it's not high volume. To my surprise it can, only a very small tractor so before the guns up to pressure it hates it for a few seconds but then runs it quite nice. It would never run that pump anywhere near full capacity and may not even be able to run this gun at a large nozzel like late summer.... but for atleast part of the year I have a very efficient way to run my booster pump.

Half throttle is about whare it peaks out at which is just fine. Dosen't get hot, no issues just putts along no problem.

Pretty impressed with this little old tractor

There is certainly a place for a tractor like that, I wish that a tractor was still made similar to those with some updates for safety and function.

I don't use my 8N at all any more.
Really need to sell it, but I am old and lazy.
We were mainly using it to haul trailers.... trailers of transplants from greenhouse to greenhouse or to the field to plant, lots of light trailers. Very good for that, this is my first time using it for a pto thing. Tried a tiller but was way to fast driving.

Fantastic for hauling trailers around the farm

Another participant here in OTT …a guy ..Ol’Gar….I know from another “type-club” to which we belong…had a non-running 9N he’d traded some junk for…and he gave it to me.

I cleaned the carb, put fresh fuel and a battery in it and it started right-up…with a Horrible KNOCK…
I found the #1 cyl had zero compression and pulled the head…to see the sleeve was missing…broken-up and down in the oil pan. That piston was simply rattling-around in the cyl.

I bought a complete re-sleeve kit and parts for a couple hundred $ and it ran GREAT. Converted it to 12v with a Delco Alt and ran it hard for 15 years mowing 27 acres regularly with an oversized 72” Rhino shredder as a “pull-behind” because it was too big/heavy for that little tractor.

Besides oil-changes and new front tires/rims due to calcium-chloride rot some previous owner had put in them.…very little other Mx was necessary in those years of use. Thankfully the rears were empty, and had 70% good Ag tires.

After 15 years of loan … I returned it to Ol’Gar and someone over in Looeasyana bought it from him…. They got a good deal on that tractor.

My point is only to add my respect / admiration for Ford’s little N-tractors. I kinda wish I’d kept it for grading the roads because it would save me having to switch implements when I do that.… especially since Ol’Gar hasn’t visited me since to check on things. :ROFLMAO: 🤪

Henry Ford was a farmer....Farmer designed equipment from day 1. Why did he leave Ford Motor Company...to make a great tractor.

According to his own biography…Henry Ford was NOT a farmer. From age 12 …He was a machinist.

And he left the “Henry Ford Company” …. which, believe it or not… stopped making Fords….to make Cadillacs.

Clyde Cessna …was a farmer….before he decided to build airplanes.

In his heart he was a farmer. He loaned hundreds of acres of Ford Land to the people of Dearborn to farm on. He bought 2500 acres of Ypsilanti to grow sow beans to make car parts. He pushed to have doors and trunks made out of plants.....Yes, he like to know how things worked, but his heart was for farming.

I need a new oil pressure spring and plug. I can literally get 100PSI if I shim the spring but if I shim it to get 50 it drops to 20 under high load once it heats.

Springs not doing spring things!

Makes me wonder though.... this old engine the pump can make 100psi.... an engine that can't make oil pressure must be crazy worn. Either that or my 8N is just super tight and had a good life.

My first attempt to shim it I went too far and got 100 is how I know lol.

Same as a water pump I have that I lent to a friend for an emergency and he had to run it really hard. The magnet had alot of metal on it when I changed the oil.... gets 60PSI oil pressure at idle. So when an engine can't make oil pressure regardless of the spring.... it must be like.... loose loose
