OK kids, I need some help. Like I said in another post I found the tiller and got what was left of it back. I know sooner or later I am going to replace wheel seals, tires and stuff. Anyway popping the plug on the tranmission letting lots of water out, I need to figure out how much gear oil goes in to it, and then on the transfer end where the tillers are I need how much that takes too. So if any of you guys have a book for a mid 70s troy-bilt horse please look and let me know if you would be so kind,,, And again never never NEVER let anybody play with your toys unless you are with them !!!!

It's probably a REAL 'Horse' model (70s...) so manuals ARE online. I've got them 'somewhere on this PC.
They had 6-7-8 HP engines, every brand.
Should be a plug on the side, remove that, fill the top one, when oil pisses out the side, yer ful !

My Ex kept it a secret, when she was going out to "play",......so that I knew not when she was "playing".
If only I had known then,.... what I much later learned!
I never have, nor never will, loan my machinery stuff,..... for others to "play" with.

Thank you, that link gave me everything I was looking for!!
Thank again
No problem. The PDF’s I have saved came from there, once I started looking everything over.

If you are going to put gear oil in it, be sure it is GL-4 only. There are brass gears and bushings in the transmission.

This is my ‘76 I’ve been working on. New wheel shaft, bearings and seals. New tine shaft and seals. Having a hard time finding wheels other than custom parts above… expensive.

I wish I could still buy those old Troy built horse tillers. The current MTD models don’t come close to the quality. I searched and bought a DR tiller last year as being the best affordable choice of current tillers.

If you go to the DR website you can read about the founder of DR. Turns out the guy developed Troy Built and sold it many years later. After his no compete clause timed out he started DR.

I also have a DR tiller. Sadly, I found a made in China sticker on the tiller.

Yes. Gl-5 and 6 have additives that will eat yellow metal. In our lifetime, probably not. I believe Gl-1 through Gl-3 will work too, but the book says Gl-4 for these old girls. Best I could find for a Junior tiller I am using was at Napa.

Interesting. I understand the current models are made in Wisconsin since Generac bought the company.

Gloryosky.... I just found something very interesting. I just found the original parts catalog and service manual and something else!!!
Troy-bilt warranty ____ NO TIME LIMIT on all parts except engine
AND !!!!!!!
Half price factory rebuilding agreement, no mater how new or OLD will be rebuilt including a beand new engine, at half the price current retail price !!!
Now this might be fun to see if they would follow up on it

except Troy-bilt was bought out by MTD..

Now WARN ( hubs and winches) has a Lifetime WARN-tee on their selectomatic hubs ( think late 50s..) so I sent the pair off my Willys for service. 'Sorry don't have parts for them, here's a brand new pair of manual hubs...for free....'
