Is UDT good for M5040?

I'm getting ready to change the hydraulic fluid in my M5040 with almost 700 hours. The owner's manual states UDT or Super UDT2. But the procedure for servicing it states to refill with new Super UDT2. So is it safe to use UDT?

I'm in Alabama and only use it for summer bush hogging, so no cold climate use. It is gear shift with hydraulic shuttle if that matters.

Thanks in advance!!

Unless you have some "hanging around"

I would spend the 25 bucks more per 5 gallons!

Are you sure the manual says UDT and not SUDT (obsolete)
Irregardless you should run Run the SUDT2

Personally I use SUDT2 because its a better performing oil at minimal extra cost. Much the same as my preference for a 5W40 engine oil.

Yes, I just checked it again to be sure. But regardless, it sounds like SUDT2 is what I should use according to the replies.
that shows UDT and/or SUDT .......... one is an old standard hydraulic oil, the other is a semi-synthetic oil.

BUT not mentioned IS the S-UDT2 - that little 2 at the end is what makes it special - special in price too.

AS mentioned in an earlier the SUDT is no longer - the S-UDT2 took it's place.

Bite the proverbial bullet and buy the S-UDT2

I'll go out on a limb and say either is fine, that's why the manual says either is fine. The SUDT2 may reduce wear and increase life of the tractor. And tractors are expensive. But sounds like you're not doing many hours anyway, and given Kubota say either is fine, you can expect whatever life the tractor is designed for with UDT. You just may get more with SUDT2.

As I've said before, SUDT2 isn't even available in my country, we get the same tractors. So obviously Kubota is OK with us putting UDT in them. But if it were available, I'd probably buy it. I'm a sucker to spend a bit more for a bit better performance.

I think you are on a pretty substantial limb.

Have you ever seen an actual datasheet for what you are getting from Kubota? Even basic properties like KV40, KV100, VI, and Brookfield? If not why is something so fundamental a secret?

I didn't catch that it doesn't have the "2".

SUDT2 is just a slightly lower viscosity reformulation of the original SUDT formulation. It also has a higher viscosity index (195 vs 160 ??) that makes it easier to pump in cold weather. SUDT ceased to exist when SUDT2 was introduced.

UDT = GOOD
SUDT = BETTER
SUDT2 = BEST

I just downloaded the Kubota app and was looking at it and apparently it has updated information. The operator's manual there states I can use either UDT or Super UDT2. It lists both and even further adds a comment that UDT is fine, but they recommend Super UDT2 for a enhanced ownership experience.

Yes - thats the verbiage in many current manuals. Naturally you want the "enhanced ownership experience".

As mentioned - the true cost of the "newer" and "better" oil is something to consider - I need to go buy some S-UDT2 and I am not looking forward to buying - but I will smile when I get it home!!

same in Canada I believe, premium UDT or dealer offers other brands even in our climate that goes from -40f - +35f.

in too would add best I can find but remember the days when straight mineral oils were used but times change, technology advances and repairs to those systems are just so darn expensive!!!

How would you actually be able to PROVE.... "better performance" ?

I bought 3 pails of SUDT-2, almost 3 years ago.
Just under $100 per pail.
I would assume that unopened, it has an indefinite shelf life.
$140+ per pail today.
My "investment" is up 40%.

I think performance is subjective - you would assume, I know - crazy word choice - that an oil that pours a bit better in cold, and does not break down as fast WOULD in fact increase performance, that performance simply being it has a little less wear on all the parts.

YOUR investment is only good, IF you sell it!
The oil has not changed in value, nor lubrication :ROFLMAO: ;)
