Just bought used 2010 BX25D. The PTO implement (brush hog mower) wouldn't lower, so I found online that the rear PTO 3 point speed control knob might have the valve closed. I tried to crank it counterclockwise, but it won't budge. I cranked so hard that the plastic started to crack. Is there some trick try to get this thing to turn?

That knob has nothing to do with your PTO. PTO is also known as power take off, which is the splined shaft at the back of the tractor. PTO drives implements that connect to your 3 point hitch.

It limits the drop speed of your 3 point hitch, and can shut it off so it will not lower at all.

When I bought my 7 year old L3800 the same issue existed. I don't think the previous owner ever moved it. Tried turning it with channelocks and heard that god awful sound that means one more micrometer turn and I'm going to have 2 pieces.

Soaked in Mouse Milk overnight and it turned by hand the next morning.

To the OP, I’d suggest getting a Service Manual for your tractor. Sounds like an operator’s manual would be in order also.

Thanks. I did try to spray wd40 in there, but it's a very concealed space - gas tank, seat, guard. I can't reach anything back into where the shaft of the handle goes. How did you "soak" it overnight?

Thanks. I've updated description. I didn't use correct terminology, but that's exactly what I'm talking about. All of my PTO attachments connect to this 3pt system, which this knob controls the speed of. I think it's completely locked, but I can't turn the handle to get my 3pt to lower.

There are better penetrating products than WD40.

I just really wet the shaft down and let it sit overnight.

Nobody has mentioned that the knob only controls the speed that it lowers WHEN you use the position handle to lower the 3pt. You did move that handle first? I only ask because you mentioned it being your first tractor…

Yes, I moved the control handle for 3pt. Not my first tractor, but just bought this one recently. Thanks

My neighbor's BX2350 had the same problem. I took a hard plastic mallet and sharply rapped the end of the knob once. It moved freely after that. YEMV

Update for those with same issue.. I put my tractor on 30 degree incline and sprayed a rust buster down shaft (used about 1/2 bottle LoL) to let it go down and soak. Left overnight. No luck. Repeated again. Couldn't get it by hand, so I used vice grips around the shaft and it finally broke loose. Cracked the plastic handle on knob I was cranking so hard!! Purpose of my original post was to see if there was some kind of release lever I was missing, buy it really was just stuck!

For rust issues like this, the best solution usually is "Kroil", with numerous applications, over several days, and frequent light tapping on the shaft......plus...... much patience!

Kroil is good stuff. I couldnt get a IH cub cadet steering wheel off to save my life I had the right puller on it no luck. I put some kroil on the tapered spline joint then tensioned the puller several turns. Old lady called for supper when I went back out into the garage it was laying on the floor.
I also use acetone and tranny fluid (not bud light)
