I have an old Sony (2008) that still works but I was thinking of turning it into a Ubuntu unit. Could I use this drive (Team Group CX2 2.5" 2TB SATA III 3D TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) T253X6002T0C101) to replace the old Sata drive?).

(y)I don't see why not. I have been replacing several several old SATA HD's with CX2's to keep old computers "usable with Win 10". The latest one was an HP laptop originally running Windows Vista and its usable now other than somewhat CPU limited when watching You Tube videos. Its mostly due to the adds.

it should work fine.
Are you sold on ubuntu? If this is first foray into linux i highly recommend trying linux mint. (I ise ubuntu as my main rig) gf like mint better as the transition from windows is smoother

Thanks much both! I guess my winter project is on. Appreciate the input on linux - I have no bent towards ubuntu other than I read a little about it being recommended. If Mint will make for an easier transition (I know nothing about unix), that would be where I should be looking.

Absolutely go with mint. If you have any questions (linux user here forever) hit me up. I can at least point you the right way

after you make the usb boot it and mess around. make sure network works etc before you install for real. Itll run fine albeit a little slow from the usb but will give you a good feel for it.

Thanks for the offer - may be a while until I get to it but I will take you up on it.
Looked at the link and that appears to be just the ticket.
Cheers

I agree with the others. Mint imo is the easiest to transition to from windows. Plus it runs a lot smoother with less resources. You should have no problem with the drive though, I would recommend a full format before hand if you have used it before just to avoid any issues.

Windows bad, Apple Bad, Mint Good.
The amount of utter shit windows has become is astounding. Ads in my OS? All the tracking its just incredibly intrusive. I dont allows any machine with windows on my network nor android. Apple is the least evil as far as phones, but every computer in my house (4-5 at any time) run linux. And I try to run services (docs, notes, chat, photos) all local as well. Get off my lawn :)

to each ,their own...
I run Win10 on this machine, though I've STOPPED ALL updates.
The BS I hate is HAVING to run a newer OS to run a newer version of a program.
It's is 'funny' though , I did install eXcell on this WIN10 machine...something 'they' said can't be done....

I use excel a lot - it pizzes me off I have had to buy three versions solely because of the updates to the operating systems. I am not enough of a techy I want to work with the under the hood stuff.

I have 2003 version ( 11.5612.5606) up and running on this WIN10 (64b) PC.

This is the 'real' version(self contained ). Use it to do my Federal corporate taxes, once a year.....
also contains my MECCANO collection parts information too.
