How do you feel about "restaurants" where you have to cook your own food? Black Rock.

I don’t care much. I’m there to buy something, hopefully for a reasonable price. I’m not there to meet the cashier. If it keeps prices from going up, that’s more in keeping with my goal of buying stuff for a reasonable price than insisting someone check me out.

I thought his full service/self service gas was on point. I well remember several folks I knew that were quite concerned about the disappearing full service stations because they did not know how to put gas in their car or check the oil (something full service stations routinely did). But they figured it out, got good at it, and no longer thought about it. And that’s part of self check out for me at this point; I have enough practice I’m pretty good at it so not a big deal. Not that I never have an issue but I don’t have any more than any of the cashiers the store is paying.

I do kind of like the idea of a self check discount if they really want to push self check. I’d rather see it voluntarily via market pressure v legislated, though.

I’m a competent cashier and a crappy chef so I’ll check myself out but I ain’t eating my own cooking. 🤣

I have a full time job and im not getting a discount to do it myself so I won't use self checkout. If it's the only option i'll push the button for help and let them do it. Gas, my friend has a full service service station and I fill up there.

The retailer has a budget for labor cost. Either on a register, on the floor, or in the office. If they want to lower that budget it is their call.
Do your customers tell you how to run your business ?
I go to the register with the shortest line.

I refuse to use self check out, I think people deserve jobs. Grocery stores here are posting record profits after record price increases due to cough cough "inflation"

Local high end fancy supermarket. Put in a dozen self checkout lanes. Closed them all but four. Seems there was a lot of 'shrinkage'. So the customers got a five finger discount.

IF I got a discount to use the self checkout... I would use it more. Other wise, I let someone else bag it for me.

NC, if you renew your vehicle registration online, you have to pay a company $3 extra dollars for doing that. It's takes me less time to write a check and slap a $0.50 stamp on it and have them pay someone else to enter in the data... It's cheaper and easier for me to do it but you charge me extra.... it doesn't add up for me.

Same with paperless billing, make it worth my while!!!! ...and I'll think about it.

That’s what I tell my wife about those Korean barbecue places. Why go out for dinner and have to cook it too?

Full service stations are non-existent in most of the western US (except Oregon). I do agree about the paperless billing; I do it when I get a discount. As for the checkout, if I have only a few things, I prefer self check because it’s quicker. For a full basket, I let them do it.

Most of the time I like self checkout. The only exception is Costco, where you have to take the items out of the cart, scan them and then put them on a place where apparently they are weighed to verify you actually scanned the right item.

Other places you can scan what is in your cart and be done with it. I can spend my time waiting in a line for a cashier to check me out, or spend less time checking myself out and be on my way. Most of the time anyway. If a cashier is waiting for someone I will use that option. BUT if not, I will gladly use the self check out and be on my way faster.

Generally I like the self check out option. Just me maybe...

Virtually EVERY self-checkout I have ever seen has a scale to weigh items after they are scanned.... perhaps you have not noticed the scales on some of them?

Long time ago I was a box boy at the local grocery store. We hand stamped every can and jar, stocked the shelves and did inventory. Our counts were handed to a manager who then calculated the next order. We also bagged and carried out for anyone asking for help.
All labor intensive. Nobody seemed to complain or even notice that most of those jobs are gone.
Stores need to adapt or die.

$0.50 cent stamp?
"forever" stamps?
If you bought them a while ago!

Postage is $0.60 now, and about to go to $0.63

I don't use "self-checkout". Period. Ever. Two reasons- 1. It just allows the stores to employ less people. 2. The most important reasonis I DON"T WORK THERE!!!!! I'm the guy with the money, on THIS side of the counter. You want my money? Provide the item, service, or both.

I guess I don't use enough self check out lanes...the ones I like let me scan the items in the cart and do not require removal at all.
