Hey everyone
I'm trying to figure out the best way to ensure the proper timing when removing and installing the injection pump on a kubota l285 without having to pull the entire timing case cover. The service manual Says very little about this. I can't seem to find any inspection covers on the timing cover to see the timing marks. The marks on the flywheel don't seem to help either, any advice??

Injection pump timing is accomplished with the shims under the injection pump. If you're just moving the injection pump for repair in most cases just reinstall the injection pump with the same shims. If you want to verify timing you use the flywheel marks and spill time the injection pump. That is a whole nother process. No need to get in to the timing cover if the gears have not been touched.

The marks on the flywheel are
32 FI
32TC
14FI
14TC
Where should the flywheel be prior to pulling the pump?

What 007 said is what you need to know. Just realize those shims may be so thin you don't realize they are shims!!

OK, so if I decide to put on a different pump(one that has already been rebuilt) I can just put the same shims back exactly where they originally were.

Yep and the timing will be correct.
The bottom of the Injection pump base and fuel injector pump rollers does not change from pump to pump.
The top of the block to the fuel cam lobes changes between engines, thus the need for different shims.

There is no gear in the pump?
just pistons with rollers.

Are you talking about the gear that run the Fuel cam?
Then yes that has a key way, but you won't be getting to it if you just do the pump exchange.
