Bx2230d.
I start the tractor with the hi/low range lever in the neutral position.
It will move while in the neutral position. (it's in gear without moving the range selection lever out of the neutral position)
If I fail to put it in low or high range and head down a slope it'll pop out of gear and start freewheeling.
Also, the hi/low range selector is not positioned correctly. i.e. does not line up with the hi/low/neutral markings.
I looked at all the linkages and don't see any way to adjust it.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Check the "nuts and bolts" down under where the linkages are located. See if anything is "off" there.

Is this a new problem or an old problem? Has it been this way since you purchased the tractor or did it just recently become a problem? If an old problem, then I would suggest having the dealer fix it, because it might be a complex issue. If a new problem, then look for evidence of damage to the linkage by a branch or some other object. Once you determine if and how it was damaged, then just reverse the direction of the damage to correct the issue. If this is beyond what you feel comfortable doing yourself, at least determine the cause and then let the dealership fix it. Once you start bending things, not knowing if that is the issue, you can make it worse than it originally was, and that can lead to more expense having to buy new linkages, etc. Complex issues for an experienced technician can be an easy fix. Easy to fix problems can become complex problems when an inexperienced person attempts repairs. As the sign says...

$85 per hour for repairs
$105 per hour if you want to watch
$150 - $200 per hour to fix what you screwed up trying to repair!

Does it jump out of both high range and low range?
I think the OP is saying that when he has the lever in what appears to be neutral, the tractor will start but it will still be slightly in gear. So it will move even though the lever appears to be in the neutral position.

So if he forgets to actually put the lever into one of the positions, either rabbit or turtle, and starts down a slope it will jump out of gear and into neutral.

To me this indicates that it’s only partially engaged in gear, when the tractor moves while the lever indicates it should be in neutral.

The OP will hopefully confirm this.

Cannot offer a solution. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on the setup will.

I checked all the linkages and don't see any available adjustments that wouls correct the issue
Question: Can you find neutral by moving the lever slightly either towards rabbit or turtle. This data point might help someone with knowledge come up with suggestions.

I purchased the tractor 6 months ago. I use it mostly on flat-level ground and it's fine.

It only occurs if I drive on a slope.

The problem has probably been there since I got the tractor and I never noticed it

I've checked all the linkages and all are fine. Nothing bent or out of place.

I'll be taking it to a technician in the new year.

Thanks

it will only start in neutral as by design. The neutral lever position is forward ( towards the turtle).

I.e. not aligned with the neutral marking on the housing.

When starting the tractor I move the lever to the neutral position and it pops into place although not aligned with the marking on the housing. i believe the neutral safety pawl holds it in position.

But you said the tractor will move when the lever is in what it thinks is neutral, but is actually slightly off center, so the drive train is obviously not in the neutral position, but slightly in gear at that time.

But it sounds like the question is why does the lever not stay in the neutral position? From your description it sounds like the lever wants to stay slightly engaged in gear. I would guess if you physically move the lever to center you may find neutral. If so the question becomes why doesn’t the lever stay in the neutral position. What is forcing it off center?

There is a switch that senses if the tractor is in neutral. This obviously must be miss adjusted if the tractor starts while still in gear, however slightly it may be in gear. I mean, gears meshing but not fully.

I do not know. The only neutral safety device I know of on my BX2200 is an electrical interlock. Never head of a safety pawl but don’t know.

Hopefully you will get some knowledgeable help here. I just assumed there are gears in the BX for speed change similar to my B2910. My BX has been so reliable over the years I never had to think about it.
