My wife and I process our own venison. I hang the animal on the tractor bucket and we get to work with a couple knives and a saw.

Been there.. done that back when I was younger.. used one of the old meat grinders you would mount to a counter top for a lot of ground venison.

We used a hand crank grinder for many years until all the kids moved out. Now it is electric and the saw is a battery operated one. Once the kids moved out we could finally afford to buy things to make our work easier.

Wasn't that what the kids were for?? Grandma only had a hand grinder. When she got to where she couldn't handle it she would call over to dad's. He would send one of us over to run it for her.

That IS what the kids were for. As a matter of fact all 5 of them got their muscle development from labor around the house. Everything from chopping firewood, mowing lawn by hand, and painting the house with brushes, and more. It builds character.

My grandparents were very much scandinavian (almost 100 %) and around Christmas would butcher a small beef for the winter. Our jobs as the grandkids would be to constantly stir the blood to keep it from coagulating for use in making blood sausage and blood dumplings. As I remember, the smell from the cooking of those was not very pleasant at all! But if the thought of what you were eating didn't enter your mind both the sausage and dumplings were pretty tasty. Coming from the "old country" and going through the depression they were of the mindset that absolutely nothing went to waste. That traditional meal ended with the passing of the grandparents.

I am of Norwegian decent and I remember my grandma making blodklub. She would make it from pigs blood.

I had an order placed for a quarter of beef last summer from someone I’ve gotten some before. He’d said it would be ready in November, and I’d reminded him the last time I saw him. He delivers feed from the elevator I’ve dealt with for 40 years. Well it is now December, no word from Ryan, so I sent a text today to remind him, he replied saying he was all sold out, wouldn’t have any more steers till next December. That he had a little hamburger if I wanted it. No mention of “sorry I forgot your order, etc.”. I am ticked. No mention of price is ever discussed, I pay whatever he asks, so it can’t be a matter of so and so was willing to pay more.

When I was in college and had no money I would frequently "prepare" Hamburger Helper without the hamburger. Thus it was referred to simply as "Helper". I would recommend it. Not bad at all.

Now we are getting productive. How about Top Ramen? Just add any scraps of meat and/or veggies to the noodles and you have a gourmet meal.

Still enjoy Top Ramen. I enjoy it unadulterated. A snob perhaps. I recently became acquainted with Walmart frozen hamburger patties. Pretty good and can't beat the price. I was there 3 days ago any they had plenty. Tell the boys to keep it quiet lest a run develop.

We have a phrase "Top Ramen poor" to indicate if someone has truly been poor - if you know 20 ways to make a meal out of a packet of ramen, then you get 'poor'...

Both of your statements are true for me. I have been "top Ramen poor. That is when I learned to like Ramen. Maybe because I had to, but I learned many ways to prepare it.

We grew up with all those "budget stretcher" products and meals. Most weren't too bad. But it still took a good 15 yrs. of only one, two or three bites before I could down a small helping of Lutefisk at Christmas!

I have not been that hungry yet. My grandpa used to prepare and eat Lutefisk all the time. That seemed to be a part of our Norwegian heritage that I could not indulge in, ever.
