I have a 2012 M7040HDC. The 4WD lever operates fine and all indications are that it is out of 4WD, but it never disengages. I use the loader to lift up the front wheels and they don't turn freely. I can get one to turn and it rotates the other tire in the opposite direction with alot of resistance. I have looked at the linkage and don't see anything bent or worn.

I am with tthorkill thinking it is the limited slip in the front dif..

I will be at my 2012 M7040 tomorrow and will try what you are doing.

If I pick up the front wheels with the loader and drive in reverse, both wheels turn.

Have you checked MFWD linkage to be sure it's still connected correctly. Have you tried driving in reverse a little distance after pushing MFWD control handle down?

Yes. I have check all the linkage and it is fine. It operates as it should freely. I have drive in reverse with tires on ground and raised.

I sprayed everything with pb blast hoping that it will help, but it didn't. Everything looks normal and shift normal, but it still has the front locked in 4wd.

Have you checked to be sure pin(key 70) & bolt(key 40) are present? I', not even sure I have a clue what task bolt(key 40) performs but Messicks shows to stock that part & key 30
